SL 2-up TT 13/8

Postby carl f » Mon Aug 15, 2011 7:31 am

Sylv and i came 2nd in the pairs well and truly beaten by CS Grupetto but well in the mix over the rest of the field. It was a surprisingly hilly course with 500 meters of climbing over 26 miles and once again very windy!. The fast downhill sections proved a bit hairy in places with my disk on, the side winds and rough roads proving a challenge
We drove down last wed eve to ride the course but i took Sylv on a different TT course and we got lost  but managed to have a drive before the race on the day to see what pain lay ahead
Really 'enjoyed' the pain and doing the 2-up with sylv its a diferrent feeling doing a 2-up as i didn't want to let Sylv down which hopefully i didn't :D

I can’t say I enjoy time trials but that was particularly unpleasant

Don’t quite know why but my legs had been rubbish all week (was relieved Palace was off) and when we went for our reccy I was struggling at times to keep up with Carl, and was sticking to my 30sec turns whereas he was sometimes doing close to a minute.

After a rest day on Friday I was hoping to feel better. A 20min warmup up and down the first hill told me it wasn’t quite the case, though things had improved a little. Also realised just how windy it was, and after the morning’s rain it was now getting pretty warm, baking in fact inside the aero helmet. There were quite a few more people than the previous event on the same course a couple weeks ago.

I’m not sure I want to re-live the misery of the ride by talking about it. I like hills, but not in a tt. There was hardly a flat section. Carl was motoring. I was in pain. It must have looked comical at times on some of the drags, with Carl leading and powering up them all tucked in aero, and me in his wheel out of the saddle on the limit. I reassured myself that he couldn’t see me doing that, and was glad I’d opted out of the disc wheel as the noise from swinging the bike side to side would have made it obvious. On a lot of the hills though I had to make sure I was staying at the front all the way, going my own rhythm, as I was seriously worried of getting dropped if I was behind. Carl said after that he thought I was going well to lead on all the climbs

We caught our 2min pair and later 4min (all on road bikes), which was a small boost and, apart from the 70km/h downhills, the only pleasant moment of the ride. For most of the second lap I felt a little bit better, but the hills towards the second part felt harder than first time round. In a tt you're in enough pain as it is, but you have to constantly think of your position - flat back, narrow shoulders and knees, head tucked in but looking up - and this gets harder as you tire - I hate it

The last rolling section felt like it was never-ending, we were now taking short turns and I thought of that Boardman quote that you should ideally be collapsing on the finish line, except I was getting worried I would collapse before it. Finally the finish line. Couldn’t believe Carl was doing a hilly 50 the very next morning. Was well impressed by his ride. Not to take anything away from it, but wish I’d had better legs and been a better match to his strength. As he said though, we were smashed by 3 minutes by the winning pair, which would take some beating.

Worth posting the individual times too – some seriously fast ones there.

Happy to oblige Ian - and I'm well up for the 4-up now (twice as less suffering right?).
