Crystal Palace 16/08

Postby Ghaleb » Tue Aug 16, 2011 10:32 pm

Only me and John from ACC tonight in the 3/4 cat ...not much for me, got dropped after the 5th or 6th lap I cant remember, on the uphill drag section...and then joined a small group that also got dropped. On one of the laps the wheel in front of me just slowed down suddenly on the uphill drag section and my wheel touched his and I almost went off but managed to control my balance...after a few laps I saw a couple of riders on the ground due to a crash that happened, don't know how it happened?... this caused few diversions to the race and then I lost the group I was with and from there I just continued by myself...John just disappeared somewhere ...Sylv and Steve were there too in the 1/2 cat. and they looked like they were doing well!

Good race...well I will just consider it as a training session for me...and thanks to Marcus, Phil and his son that were cheering from the side

Nasty and silly little crash from what I saw. Some uncertainty in the bunch on the straight and ... it's like you see in slow motion what's going to happen. I turned away when they went down - don't like gore. Massive respect for entering in the first place.

Anyway, video clips stitched together:

Great videos Phil. Thanks to you and all who came to watch and support last night. It was awesome!
not sure if it's my cup of tea, much prefer the longer courses like New Chapel!

New Chapel was much more fun and I lasted longer into the race!

That’s funny cos the more it goes the more I’m only enjoying those short, intense Crit efforts on the road .. but they take a while to get used to, so stick at it.

I went to sign-on as soon as I arrived, picked up my bike to find the rear tub punctured by an inch-long rusty nail. Brilliant. No panic, there was half an hour to the race. I had a spare tub but no tape, so Steve and I carefully removed the tape from the old one and swapped the tubs. Have to say I wasn’t too reassured as the bond didn’t seem that strong, and didn’t fancy doing a George tub-roll especially with my recently replaced carbon rim, so it was probably a blessing that minutes later it appeared that the spare tub was going down too. Hugo Humphreys and hid dad kindly offered to lend their spare training wheel – complete with 14/25 junior gears, fresh back from a trip to France and Belgium. After a practice lap I realised that this was probably going to be fine for the Palace circuit – and nice close ratios, just about 300gm heavier.

Lots of strong people last night. I have my toughest race of the year on Saturday, so the plan was to ride tactically and do as little as possible to save the legs. At Palace though, that’s like saying to myself I’m not going to have any birthday cakes in the office when someone brings homemade brownies .. got myself in first 5 just as attacks fired from the gun – Jake, Hugo, Andy, Kevin .. First really significant move was Jody putting a devastating attack (just like Stu used to : ) up the hill, which unfortunately for him no-one could follow, or jump to for the next few laps when he was finally caught.

Race went on and it felt a bit like previous week – bunch was slowly stringing out and it looked like it could split at any minute with those not able to sustain the pace left behind. At some point I led on the top bit and slowed down but no-one was coming past, so as we approached the hairpin I went for it, for the first time with a nice clear run. As expected I got a few metres gap on the exit so pushed on, with someone soon joining me (now this shows how confused I get in races, but I’m sure it was a DP, though the video shows a LD and I’m not sure at what stage that was, must be later on), plus Kevin soon after that.

Through and off mode, the DP put an awesome turn for half a lap which cemented our gap, I was beginning to suffer though and wishing a few more would come and join us – which is just what happened. We had Ian, Hugo Robert and Harry to make the strong break of 6 (or 7?). But with Jake, Adam, Germain, Jody in the bunch it wasn’t obvious that we would stay away. Then the 3/ 4 race accident happened (quite a nasty one it seems so hope they are ok), and we had the final 22 min of the race on the shortened lap – with the blasted hill coming every 1’30 instead of 2’. I was keeping a close eye on Kevin and most of all Ian, which cost me some energy as he tried to jump away once, but wasn’t sure who the other LD was, and he attacked with about 5-6 laps to go at the top after I’d put in a hard effort, and no-one else reacted.

Bad move as he (Harry) went on to win solo - nice. After a few thwarted attacks (not by me, one day I will have the guts to try!), and having realised that the finish had been relocated to 3/ 4 way up the hill due to the ambulance still in attendance, once again I got confused and thought we were on our last lap. So did Robert in all truth, and as I took his wheel he started gunning it up the climb, I just couldn’t come past but my heart sank when I heard the bell as I thought I’d clinched 3rd place .. my legs were just shot now, I had to let the others come past down the hill, then Hugo attacked followed by Ian, Kevin was dying at the back but Robert was slowly catching me up the hill, I just wasn’t going anywhere, slower and slower the hill was never ending. On the line and I couldn’t tell which one of us got 4th – turns out I should probably have thrown my bike over the line. Steve held on to the bunch and got a 10th place, beaten only by Germain (check out his sprint) and a couple of Elites!
Great videos Phil.

+1.

Is it the final week next week? Not raced at Palace for a couple of years, might drag my testers carcass up there to get dropped repeatedly on the hill.

Blimey, looks like I'm putting some effort in for a change

Hey Sylv, fine result again sir, and super performance :D. Shame about the finish though - schoolboy error, you won't do that again eh

Ghaleb and John - good efforts guys, and make sure you come back for the start of the season next year. It might take a while but you will definately get there, you are both good enough.

Quite a big field in the E12s, and straight from the off it was the usual mad dash for pole position in to the hairpin. Maybe one day I might give it a bit of welly and try to get near the front myself, rather than the usual "after you, and you, and you. Sh!t I'm near the back again  ". I've just not the confidence to get near the front as my negative thinking get the better of me, telling me it will be easier at the back - wrongly. Everytime is the same, I bottle it, end up toward the back and then suffer like a dog as guys get catapulted through the back door leaving me to pick up the pieces. Mid pack would probably be the best spot for me, I really need the shelter in the early laps when the nitrous gets switched on at the front.

It seemed to splinter quite badly. I couldn't tell how many there were up the road as they went in ones and twos. I think some came back initially, but innevitably the usual suspects including Sir Sylv went and stayed. A few had missed out though, Jody, Jake and Germain, so the pace could still be right up there if others chipped in to help. I went through a bad patch about this time and seriosly contemplated pulling out, but luckily I found a couple of the bigger guys to sit behind for a lap or so and this made the difference between dropping off and staying in. Also Adams left hand on my back helping me close a gap might have helped a bit :D . It was my last Palace of the year and I wanted to finish.
Steve held on to the bunch and got a 10th place

Oh no no no, it was much more exciting than that Sylv.

After the crash and the shortening of the circuit there were about 10 laps to go. The hill was now coming around again too bloody fast. Jake and Germain decided enough was enough and so blasted off the front, and I was left wondering if there were now any points to fight for, probably one if we were lucky. Up the hill with 5 laps to go I found myself near the front of the bunch. It wasn't any resemblance to the bunch that started but it was still the main bunch. Someone jumped and I followed, and someone followed me. We were away - no honestly its true, it really happened. I was in a break :D . Ok there were lots of guys up the road, but I was in a break with people chasing 8) 8) 8). But 5 laps, it couldn't last surely. The other two guys were Jody Crawforth and Jon Lewis and we worked together quite well. I did the hill each lap (don't ask me how that happened), and the others shared the other bits. We could now see Jake and Germain up the road and we were catching them. I kept looking behind but it didn't seem like the rest of the field were closing in on us, so I just concentrated on the road ahead. Lap by lap the gap closed to the two guys ahead but time was running out.
Last lap now, I still had work to do, I couldn't sit in. I did my bit up the hill and was now pretty shot. By the time we reached the bottom of the hill getting ready to sprint to the finish 3/4 of the way up it, we were only about 20m from catching J and G. Jody took off first and I followed but we weren't going to catch them. I tried to sprint but it wasn't much of one, never mind. On the video you can see how close we came to catching though. I really enjoyed that, my first little break and top ten again to boot :D :D

Roll on next year :D :D :D :D

Good tactics Steve, take them up the hill at the speed you were happy with.

Great race to watch, great write ups and good filming from Mr Pie. Sylv on the attack from the outset and Steve initially holding up the rear then moving up as the race progressed. I didn't see Harry break of from the front and thought he was lapped :o

Great result from both. Steve you are right you should be at the front or mid pack at least. You are too good to be near the back.
The 3/4's was just as exciting with John and Gheleb getting some race fitness.

I thought it was the last week and so persuaded my daughter to come and cheer. I was disappointed there wasn't more Acc representation as I'm sure Sylv and Steve were too as they could do with some help.

Will be there again next week and hope to see  , George, Darren, Ant, etc. adding to the ACC numbers.
