organic or Sintered

hi guys i need new set of break pads for my mtb

i was wondering any of u could maybe help me with choosing the right one

my original break pads are worn out
the stock pads looks like organic but after a bit of searh i come across with a lot of reviews and discussion
some people recomend organic pads some dont
some of them recomend using both at the same time so one side organic the otherside sintered


so what is experience
i am only using my mtb for off roading
so i neeed some strong breka pads
my stock pads are sram avid b4 but seems like all i can find is c4 and they say it is loud and wears out vey qick????

Organic wear quicker but give better modulation and slightly better braking. I wouldn't mix and match on the same wheel however. I know I bang on about them, but the guys at Nirvana in Westcott ride a lot around Leith Hill and as it's where I mostly ride I tend to follow their advice. I have 140 discs in back and a 160 up front. I've found sintered tend to overheat, partricularly on the smaller rear disc. I would also tend to prefer softer pads as they're cheaper to replace than discs - same as the road bike where i use koolstop salmon pads as they are softer than the stock shimano pads and so don't chew up the rims as badly.

It's easy:

Unless you are going to the Alps or the Rockies, the formula is as follows (assuming that you have hydraulic discs)

Sintered for the winter when the mud and water make a great grinding paste for brakes, and temperatures are lower so boiling the fluid less of an issue

Organic for dry summer rides when the speeds are higher, and the grinding paste less evident, but the temperatures are higher and the risk of boiling the brakes increases.

If you have cable operated discs, such as Avid BB7s, there's no fluid to boil, so it's even simpler - sintered pads all the time.

Rotors are made of steel, and the ones on my guiding bike showed no noticeable wear after 4 seasons guiding in the Rockies with sintered pads on Avid BB7 brakes.

Is it possible to overheat discs in the Surrey Hills? I drag the brakes far more than I should and have never had any issues. So I use sintered the whole time, as chnaging pads is fiddly.

i think i will buy organic pads for now and SEE WHAT THE DIFFIRENCE GONNA BE

if i am still not happy with the performance i will go ahead with bleeding the system also.


i have juicy 7 so i went to sram/avid juicy 7 on web and found a manual which shows all process step by step DIY

Get two sets and carry the second around with you, 'cos in the wet, organic Avid pads just dissolve.

Thanks for this post guys! I am changing my MTB pads at the moment and am struggling with the back pads!... Sylv was kind enough to come over and lend a hand in installing them last night, but still no joy with the back pads! .... will post if the problem persists!
