Clarencourt 4 up TTT

Postby George » Sat Sep 10, 2011 7:31 pm

This afternoon we had 2 ACC teams entered for this yearly 4 up TTT.

ACC A
Carl F
Steve B
Sylv
George

ACC B
John G
Galeb
lija
Bob L

On our warm up lap we spotted team B looking a tad lost so directed them up to the HQ at Alfold Crossways.

We got going and straight off into a fairly rapid pace§, the decent of Dunsfold hill was a tester for Aerobars

after a while it started raining so the corners became treacherous especially on TT tubs at 150psi. I overcooked a corner and did quite a bit of cyclocross riding to get back on the road, luckily unscaved but now Sylv and I had lost our bottles, well the drinking ones anyhow.

The pace was quite high and Steve's legs were burning with pain as he missed a turn or two then the next thing we knew we were down to 3 men.
We were cranking along at a fair lick and on the second lap had a tussle with a team from South Downs bikes who were riding slightly slower than us at that time.

With around 5 miles to go Carl dropped back a little Sylv and I eased up, we both expected him to have a mechanical but to our amazement Carl was starting to bonk
We eased up quite a bit and eased Carl home but with 2 miles to go he really hit the wall and was seeing funny colours and blurry vision, we took stock and gave him draft home where he collapsed after the chequred flag.

Then 10 mins later Steve rolled in after riding a lap and a half on his own, then collapsed as well

 Getting your revenge for the 2up Sylv? :D . Don't kill him, he's got to quote for some work for me.

Well done guys I'll have to have a go at this next year, sounds fun in a nicely masochistic way.

No I was doing my best to provide him as much shelter as possible by sitting up! Bonking is horrible enough when you're on your own or out of race situation, but with 20 min to go in a race where you all have to finish ..

Sorry for Steve too who didn't get much of a race on Matt's bike, but he finished his laps - and gave us a good laugh when he collapsed.

As for fatboy, well had to ease off a bit for him on the climbs, but boy was he motoring everywhere else :D

Thanks George for lending the bike again. I should have my bike running next week hopefully :)

It was only me, Ilija, and John. Bob couldn't make it due to the crash he had during our practice run we had last thurs. together. He got back to us and his on his way to recovery, and will soon be back on the road. We started off last, as it took us like around 45mins to find the HQ, and we wouldn't have found it if we didn't see the Acc Team A on their warm up, which we then followed to HQ. We didn't start too hard... we kept a good steady pace and we worked well together. Until I missed a turn when I was on the font, and had to turn back and catch up with them...and then back to a nice rhythm... Second lap in and we were still doing ok, until again, well this time all of us missed a turn due to the marshall not being on his spot, and thanks to John who heard the marshal shouting from somewhere not visible! So we turned back and back to the rhythm again. This is where Iliya started to suffer, and me and John had to do longer turns in front, until like just 5 miles to go, Iliya bonked and that was it for him. Me and John had to ease the pace then, and kept it together until the end. Enjoyed this it was good fun working as a team and shouting at each other

Feel terrible for letting the team down :( that was a bonk from hell and only after 30 miles!. Felt good and strong the whole way up until then, think we worked well as a team maybe a bit of a recce on the course a week or two before plus a TT group ride may have helped a bit but that wouldn't have stopped me from the bonk. No idea why it happened but can only put it down to feeling a bit under par during the week
Anyway great fun for me up until then, well done to steve for making the effort to finish on his own plus to the other ACC team
Chicken kebabs and beer went down a treat later

No, mid-race bonking is not fun. Only happened to me once but been close a couple of times and just made it to the cake in time.

Letting the boys down like that doesn't feel very nice at all. Missing turns so early on and then dropping off the back shortly after was pure pants. My legs just exploded and I couldn't hang on, there was nothing in my legs at all. I wasn't good enough, pure and simple. Thing is, I should have been. I've had a pretty good season and have ridden at that intensity in races, and in chain gangs. I had no illusions at all that I was going to make it to the end, but I did think I would be of some assistance  . It is so frustrating.
As the guys were pulling away from me I was so angry with myself, I felt like getting off and chucking the bike in to a field. But it was Matts bike I was on so that wasn't an option  . So I carried on and decided to punish myself for being so crap by finishing the race on my own, as hard as I could, another 30 miles ish. I hurt sooo bad, so so bad. I found depths I'd never been to before, and being in an alien position (first time on a TT bike), it hurt everywhere. By the time I got back back to HQ I was a wreck. I got off the bike and slumped on to the grass with the lads laughing there heads off
Tea and cake was pure bliss, so I got more :D

It was so unfortunate for Carl to bonk like that, and maybe he wouldn't have done if there had been 4 to share the work rather than 3 :( . He was looking good for the short time I saw him, they all were. They were very smooth and very slick, and it looked as though they would post a good time.
Anyway, sorry again guys

Well done to Ghaleb, Jon and Ilija. Good effort guys

Great write up lads- wish I was there to cheer you on, but I'm in sunny San Fran.

Fancy the shad being tired!
Steve- as you have found out- riding a TT bike in the position is f@ckin hard work, you may have done better on your Ridley.
How did you find it Sylv? You haven't done a lot of TT work this year either.
Hanging onto the Brent monster can't have been fun for anyone tho.
I know how much you suffered tho as last time I did this you made me hurt like hell.

Carl probably needs a good dinner:- But the event IIRC is held mid afternoon, so it's right when you need an afternoon nap.

It was ok. When I was in George’s wheel, there were times where it felt I was working just as hard behind him as when I came to the front!
Few times I struggled with the peeling off and getting back on at the back, so from then I made sure I peeled off on a downhill : )
I felt stronger towards the end, or maybe it was that George was fading a little bit too.
Not easy to plan your eating with those start times yes. Had big breakfast just before 11, then some pasta when we got there round 12.30.
In a way, I was kind of glad to be able to save my legs a bit for Sunday’s cross race : )

Ps - Steve - don't worry about it! And good luck for the handicap champs

Well done, everyone! Fantastic effort. Great write ups, thanks.

I know next to nothing about the race. How long was it and who won? what times?

The ACC B team, despite a podium-worthy first lap, in the end due to their sense of direction already experienced in the car, avoided by the narrowest of margins being beaten by a bunch of girls in pink who rode with teddy bears in their behind-the-saddle mounted bottle cages (true) :D
It wasn't you guys who got flagged for swearing at marshalls was it ?
