What's a good (car) GPS?

My folks have a Tom Tom as well, don't think you can go far wrong with them. Only thing to mention is that the windscreen fitting thingy is not great, may have improved, but if not I'd look at a 3rd party jobbie.

I'm with sylv on this,after getting badly lost in the middle of Kent looking for the chainhurst cx last week amongst other races this season think its time to purchase one..... any advice please

To get there I realised I'd missed a turn in a small village by the river a few miles from the venue, and was about to backtrack, but then spotted a car with a bike on the roof so decided to follow it. It was a BMW so I assumed it would have a sat-nav. I was squinting to try and make sure it was a cross bike and not a road bike though. The route they took was a little longer than the planned one. It's easier when Joel's there as a co-pilot but he had a half marathon.
On the way back I just followed the Sigma van, which didn't have a sat-nav either but had Wouter Sybrandy as the co-pilot – they took the shorter route, but the roads were so narrow! At some point we went over a bridge, and had to drive on the pavement as there were cars coming the other way. Big scary tractor at some point too.

I've got a Garmin nuvi with European mapping. The screen mount is very good and i can use the charger to charge my Garmin edge from the car too as it's the same connection.
It makes travelling abroad stress free and has handy features like nearest petrol station, supermarket cash point etc.

Garmin Nuvi is what I have too! Highly recommend it.

Alternative is to use a smartphone with either a specific gps app or as I do more often than not google maps

One thing to check is whether or not your car has a heat resistant windscreen. My old Passat had that and I needed to get a special ariel for the Tom Tom. Get a BMW with a sat nav inside, they are not too bad.

I didn't really like the Tom tom that much, seemed a bit tempramental, but I did have a very old one.

we have TomTom (Europe) on the iphone, so just bought the software rather than a car specific unit, does fine.Did fine in Croatia, Italy, France etc

My Garmin nuvi 1440 has preloaded european mapping, but trying to use it in France it just would not acquire a satellite signal. Have looked online but there's no obvious sign that you should download anything to have access to the maps. Regardless i have upgraded to the latest software, has anyone had the same issue?
