Look Keo cleats

Postby Iliya » Tue Oct 18, 2011 12:25 am

I need to replace my cleats and was wondering what benefit one may have from floating ones or fixed ones? Those who use Look Keo will probably know that there is choice of 0, 4.5 and 9 degrees float - I am not sure what is the purpose of the float?

Thanks

It's to give your knee some room to move. It's a personal choice and comes down to your comfort level.

I use the grey 4.5% on my racing SIDI shoes for TT's/Road races/Club Training rides and use the red 9% for my commute into work on my Specialized shoes to allow more movement and comfort.

I have never tried the black 0% ones, I imagine they would be good for track racing! :D

Hope that helps geeza!

What John said.

It allows lateral movement and all comes down to personal choice. I started out in grey ones but then got some knee pain so went to reds. Personal choice!

I don't think there are any real "gains" to be made, just comfort.

Here's my understanding.

The float allows rotational movement of the foot.

Ideally you'd have no float to make you more connected to the bike.
However as your leg moves up and down with pedalling, your foot may need to rotate. If so, it's likely to stress the knee if the foot is not allowed some float.
(As an aside, it's also potentially easier to get out of cleats with less float, as you don't need to rotate your foot to the full extent of the float before you start to open the pedal spring.)

Don't assume both feet need the same amount of float. I use a black cleat on one, grey on the other.

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm using grey ones at the moment but thinking of switching to blacks. I feel like I have too much movement in left foot so I might even do waht Keith did and use one black and one grey.

I'm hardly a track cyclist now (!), but I've used the black no-give Keo cleats for some time, with no knee/leg pain or discomfort. I think they make a click-out for foot down more positive.
