Road casualty map

Postby Phil H » Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:10 pm

This interactive map shows recorded road accidents over the last 11 years, broken down by severity and injured party (Ped, Cyclist etc.). Very interesting for data junkies like myself.

I'm amazed at no recorded cyclist fatalities on the A23/M23 interchange. A few car oocupants though. One thing that initially surprised me was the apparent level of danger going past Fanny's Farm - and then I remembered it's on the BHF L2B route. In fact you can pretty much trace the L2B route from the green triangles.

Very interesting. I suppose it doesn't tell the full picture. Looking around Caterham there seemed to have been a few fatalities along the bypass, which is why I suppose it had been changed to single lane going north. I have known cars far exceeding the speed limit along here and getting caught out by the sweeping bends. It has even been known for a motorcyclist to exceed 170mph along here.

It is very easy for us to blame car drivers but the fatality at the Junction of Croydon Road and the bypass was that of an elderly man who walked out in front of traffic travelling at 70mph.

The young motorcyclist on the hill was pulling a wheelie whilst his helmet was unfastened, no other vehicle was involved. There are more but........

The lack of accidents at the M23 A23 junction is because it is a nice wide open stretch of road, we travel in a large visible group and it is on a Saturday am when there is less traffic.

Hmmm... Can't see the motorcyclist fatality that happened right outside my block a couple of years ago on the London Road through Hackbridge - the flat next door got a grandstand view of it.

Thats strange - before Alertnative Rides were made compulsory, the AR Lobby described the M23 junction as "notorious".

I wouldn't ride the M23 junction on my own in the dark. Don't like it. I believe there's been at least one cylist fatality there but it may be before 2000.

I think there's data missing but then this is a government dataset so missing data expected (well, in any large dataset).

I see there's one fatality on G10/42 and one on G25/53. H8 looks safer.

I think Paul is feeling the withdrawal symptoms after losing the argument with Bo, he just wants another fight!

That's about as accurate as what you said about the M23 junction.

Im just glad to see the standard club run does not go through any accident hotspots. Long live the Monty CR.

I've ridden through the M23/A23 junction a number of times on my own both daylight and at night without any problems. If you ride sensibly then most accident blackspots aren't a problem. That junction for example is actgually fairly quiet at night. I would only ride on the Caterham bypass if it was unavoidable though at any time as it has always been open to nutters misjudging things with the rolls and sweeping bends. I'll happily race up and down roads that some might consider dangerous but steer clear of that road for riding. It's unpleasant to ride and potentially dangerous.

You need to lighten up Pete. If you cant take it - dont give it.

Marco - Im only responding to previous comments on this forum so you need to nip those in the bud really if you have concerns.

Perhaps you would like to remind Pete to also be Agreeable and not describe the Normal CR as "boring, very dangerous and uninspiring".

Oh neat.........I've just seen "my" accident :D

If you look just before the A23/M23 interchange, and just after Dean Lane, you'll see a "serious injury" to a cyclist. That's me that is - on the club run 8)

Had I not been wearing my helmet, it might well have been a square rather than a triangle.
