Meanwhile, in the spirit of keeping us safe now it's getting icy I just re-fitted these studded jobs to my station mountain bike:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=60783
I got them last year and they're great on sheet ice, black ice, hard pack snow, frozen snow. Only conditions they struggle a bit is that soft slushy snow which is like riding in slippery sand. Don't know about the 700c ones fitting a standard road bike with tight clearances but they'd suit a cross bike. They also work in mud, wet roots etc so good for mild off-roading too. Once fitted they need about 20 miles or so on the road to be ridden in.

As the desk Sgt Phil Esterhaus in Hill Street Blues used to say "Hey, let's be careful out there":

Just found this on the BBC site http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16030644

Shows the pressure on A&E in London by recording the incidents they respond to in one day.

I've been watching that (No I haven't - I've been working).
[quote]Paramedics at the scene say that they have been told that a 16-year-old girl was crossing the road talking on a mobile, a cyclist gave way so that she could cross, but a van behind didn't give way, hit the bike and the bike hit the pedestrian. The girl was taken to Northwick Park Hospital. She did not have any physical injuries but had suffered shock.

I wasn't going to bother replying to you Paul because I find your attitude on almost all subjects that you comment on, including this, to be very angry and I think this forum gives you the opportunity to make comments that you would probably never make face to face. I have only spoken to you once in "real life" and that was in my kitchen at a VC's meeting when I introduced myself. Since then, you have studiously avoided making eye contact and I assume that our brief chat was a one-off.
I do feel strongly that the club can do better than use the same route week in week out and I applaud Jon's attempts to mix things up in spite of the lack of enthusiasm from you amongst others. I accept that many people enjoy the clubrun and whilst I would prefer it if the club used different routes and cafes each week, that's what we as an alternative offer and I'm happy that people choose to come with us either every week or whenever the mood takes them. Monty was never very enthusiastic about anything that wasn't his idea and with Jon's very successful Grand Days Out and our weekly rides together with Del's Sunday runs we have proved that change can work. I think our "Alternative Missionary Cult" as you call us, have achieved a lot in the last few years and regularly take 20% of the clubrun on rides in Surrey, Sussex and Kent away from the menace of fast moving traffic. I work hard, as does Del, to offer different alternatives to the Charlwood route and whilst you may not be in favour of them, the least you can do is accept them without making up childish names.
You seem to think I want there to have been accidents at the M23/25 junction, that somehow I'm cheated and beaten because none are listed. Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm not sure if you have ever been involved in a serious accident involving a fast-moving car but I have. On the A23/M23 junction some years ago, a car went into the back of a group of us at around 50-60mph, he left 2 of us on the road and sped away with a bike still wrapped around his bumper; the police caught him in Hove. One of my friends recovered after some months, the other was taken to Stoke Mandeville, stayed there for a year and has been in a wheelchair ever since; his life was effectively ruined at the time of the accident, his marriage failed and he became a grossly overweight bitter man. All of us on the ride were affected by the experience.
So you see Paul, I do have a reason to be passionate about where our club rides and I do feel the need to encourage people to try riding somewhere different. I accept your desire to do the same thing week after week but please don't make light of my belief that we should be as safe as possible by avoiding busy main roads. One fast car into the back of an Addiscombe group could make an instant change to the accident statistics map but imagine the disaster for the lives of our members and their families. I won't make any further comments on this subject.

Crickey! some proper passion out there! Great to see! :D

check this geeza out for passion! (River Plate supporter like me going nuts when they got dropped to Division B in the Argentinian Football league)

REACCIONES DE UN HOMBRE PACÍFICO: El Tano Pasman (andate a la puta que te re mil pario)

[youtubewww]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OU1mW0Ty_Y[/youtubewww]

It's all about enjoying the rides people! .... alternative routes are good too! Otherwise the same route can become stale and offer little training wise as you know when the efforts are required! .... I totally agree with mixing it up and allowing people to have a choice!

Here is to different route options! 8)

Hey Pete,

I have never avoided eye contact with you on purpose and am sorry you think that. As you say, ive only met you once and probably would not recognise you with all your gear on.

I commend you for you passion and have no issues with people going on alternative rides. I do feel however you have been over critical (boring, uninspiring etc) of the normal CR in the past which I did not think was necessary or constructive and you clearly wouldnt like it if somebody spoke the same way about your rides. This is the only reason why I have responded which I think I am entitled to do.

I do of course think Alternative Rides should be optional and the normal CR should not be cancelled once a month.

Youre accident does indead sound very nasty and I guess thats the risk we take as this could happen on any road.

Im more than happy to discuss anything I have said on this forum face to face.

Thanks for that clip John.

Oh how it brought the memories flooding back ....... my dad was a shouty sweary Argentine (he died about 20 yrs ago)

Yep, that was him down to a tee, even the cigarette in one hand and the glass of red wine in the other. Although to be honest I don't think my dad was quite at that level of passion - that guy is quite exceptional I reckon. In fact in my experience Argentines are actually surprisingly laid back over many issues which would otherwise have people ranting (driving is one example - although their driving is quite frankly atrocious) but I guess football isn't one of them.

But yeah, the shouting, the torrent of swearwords in castellano, and the wild gesticulations, pretty much sums up my dad :D

Once you have the bike and the mussels, the world is your oyster. Now enough of this shellfish ranting.

Nice one! My mum is from Argy and dad grew up in Mar Del Plata (although he is Italian by birth) .. so I have been to Argentina many times for holidays/see family etc ..... Argies are passionate about many things but nothing comes close to how passionate they are about football! :D

If you are a River Plate fan (like myself!) then you need to get down to Argy to watch "el Superclasico" when River goes back up!

Had it not been for the first one we'd have all been on our feet cheering that second effort.

Cracking game too! Have you watched the whole game? England had the upper hand throughout, missed plenty of chances, he won the game single handedly! (literally!) :D
