Thanks Phil I appreciate your note. It's been coming up at committee for a long, long time and I agree with you that a lot of folks may find the content dull, and that in itself shouldn't be a barrier to openness. There may be aspirations the committee has that could be enhanced and possibly even accelerated through sharing information more freely.
A personal example. Last year I sent a proposed change to the rules with the intention of helping information to flow more freely. This is exactly what I submitted:
[quote]“I wish to propose a change to the rules please. I'd like to propose that committee meeting agendas and minutes are a matter of public record and that they are circulated to all members or made available on line no later than two weeks before a committee meeting in the case of agenda and two weeks after a committee meeting in case of minutes.
The timings I've suggested will give people time to contribute should they wish and to ask questions should they wish too.
The committee comes in for unfair criticism around not being seen to do stuff and as you know I've long believed that we should be more open with our communication. Jon Camden’s done a top job on the club run side and the committee side should be and could be just as good.
The Addiscombe is not a secret society and by taking this step I believe the committee will be seen to be more responsive to members needs.
Like I say I will do my very best to attend the AGM however if I can't make it I see no reason why this change can't be proposed in my absence. I will put this on the forum so folks now I've suggested it and can aim any associated flak my way
”
I then found I wasn't going to be able to make the AGM (for the first time in years) so I sent apologies to committee and asked if the proposal could be raised in my absence. I also put the proposal on the club's Facebook page and it got a few likes. So perhaps there is a demand?
The lack of openness is one of the reasons I left the committee. I have no wish to support a secret society, whether that be by accident or design. I hope this gets fixed soon.
