A bit of a missed opportunity in the end - our break of 6 had the lead break of 3 within reach, but people then began to sit in to such an extent that we never caught and the sitters-in then raced for 4th

Was waiting to see what happened after seeing your result. Well done on getting in the break and a top 10 :D . A shame so many seem to want to sit in and get others to do the work in amateur racing.

First off, good result Keith.

I hear what your saying Andrew, but amateur or pro, nobody wants to be the mug that closes the gap. Just look at Milan-San Remo at the weekend!!

If the gap was only 10s though (Keith?), then it would have only taken one big turn from someone with 1-2km to go, which would have given enough time to recover enough to still be competitive for the win.

Easy for me to say though, I have no idea what it was actually like in the moment.

However, had it been me, I'd have smashed it full gas with 1km to go and gone straight over the top of the leading trio to take a glorious victory.

Obviously.

Hmmm, beg to differ on that one. Cancellara's no mug and knew that if he didn't push on then they'd be caught, wouldn't have time to recover, and he would be out sprinted by a host of riders and finish nowhere. Assessed his best bet was go like a train and try and burn his 2 fellow escapees off or at least kill their legs for the sprint. He did for one and the other only just managed to get past him after clinging on for grim death.

I find some of the tactics that Keith et al report from races odd though. Unless someone is hanging on, or very carefully trying to garner points to move up a cat (and has to play a very cagey game to get them) and surely that can't be everyone.

I always had that Mulberry character down as big wheel sucker. Him and the rest of his mates from the Paragon....

Still a good result mind. Hope you keep getting stronger throughout the season.

Ha ha Tony! No Keith and I were guilty of doing too much work. The wheel suckers were dressed in black and both not only strong enough to keep working but also easily strong enough for the uphill finish as they showed. Keith and I were somewhat amazed that we didn't catch. One of us should've jumped solo across as there was time to do that and still recover. One point of note the key wheel sucker could have simply rolled through and thus kept our group working and he was the man most likely to benefit ie win. Net effect of his action was he lost out on podium and win. I hope you're well Tony and maybe this sunshine will coax you out for you annual bike ride? MRB x

Sounds like this is a good summary of the race:

I was planning to head out to the ACC road race over the weekend - but am committed elsewhere (helping someone move house). Therefore, any chance of an outing on the bike for me for this year is postponed for now. Hope the race goes well and is free of interference from any pikeys / Surrey yummy mummies in their 4x4s.
