Laptops - advice sought

Postby Amy » Sun Apr 15, 2012 3:45 pm

I'm getting fed up with my home pc - it's positively ancient in computing terms, I don't use it for much beyond browsing the internet and maybe some documents and image storing... and quite frankly, it's taking up space in my flat and making it look messy. So...

any suggestions on a decent laptop? Doesn't have to be all-singing and dancing, so long as it's reliable and otherwise works ok!

Thanks,

Amy

I just went to PC World and got the best decent make one that was within my budget, depends what it would be on when you go as they have offers and depends what they have on offer the week you go. I have a HP G61 and have been very pleased with it, Does everything I will ever want of it and a lot more and has a nice widescreen display. A quick shufty at the website shows a couple of HPs on offer reduced from £550-600 to £350-400.

I think if you just want a basic machine for web, email and normal windows programs like excel, word etc then pretty much anything will suffice, make sure it has enough RAM and a good enough graphics card for iplayer etc (which most probably do these days) and it has everything most people want. Unless you are going to be doing a lot of techie stuff, gaming or using it as a video machine then I'm sure most will do the job.

Thanks, Ant, but while that might be about the level for you, I'm thinking of something a bit more advanced

Thanks for the tip, Marco - unfortunately, I don't know much about computers, though someone else has given me some parameters to consider for the type of use I'd make of a laptop. I shall add yours to the list.

Might be worth looking at the Apple Macbook Pro. A bit pricier than a basic windows laptop but it comes with some decent software and Macs are also known for reliability and relative immunity to viruses. And they look nice too :)
As for other software, Open Office is also a good free alternative to MS Office and its files can be saved in .xls or .doc format for using on other pcs.
Beyond that I can advise no further - listen to Marco and others
