Jon Snow wrong?

Postby Phil H » Tue Apr 24, 2012 2:43 pm

Just spotted this on the BBC site. I'm not sure that money needs to be spent on cycle lanes or "infrastructure". Separate cycle lanes are particularly not practical in places like London and anyway will fill up with broken glass and have wandering iPeds infesting them. Blue/green paint lanes can increase danger by encouraging the unwary to filter up the left-hand side of large vehicles. Advanced Stop Lines also encourage dangerous filtering. And I can't agree with the "turn left on red" as it will lead to confrontations with pedestrians trying to cross the road.

IMO, all that's needed is to enforce the rules we have. There are laws about intimidating vulnerable road users and abusing people on the move. The highway code has it covered when it comes to giving cyclists plenty of room.

Agree, enforce the laws that are there including against cyclist for jumping red lights etc. Difficult one to police though unless you have the numbers. I'm also in favour of greater advertising along the lines of creating more harmony between all road users rather than just waving a stick.

Maybe an advertising campaign on the backs of buses - Some people are cyclists. Get over it.

Cycle lessons and proficiency test before you are allowed a Driving licence.

before you're allowed out on a bike  but yes, I do believe that getting experience of the roads on a bike is a good thing before getting a car.

Or a bl00dy great "No Entry" sticker on the rear of buses and lorries warning cyclists not to go up the nearside on danger of death.

Easy. Make cyclists more visible.
No, no, none of that hi-viz yellow stuff, everyone should wear a loud stripey tie like Jon Snow.

This sort of rider is normally only visible by the light of the mobile phone held to their ear.

I've noticed a few lorries with stickers like that. I wonder if some people who you see nodding along the green tarmac look up from their front wheel far enough to see them though.

TfL did do a poster:

The problem with that poster is that it looks to me like all those cyclists were waiting there at the lights to go straight on and the lorry driver is coming up the outside and turning left (possibly one with defective eyesite or a high blood alcohol level or on his phone etc....add your own option).
A rare occurrence I know, I've never been cut up by a motor vehicle overtaking me and turning left - LIE.

Can happen both ways Chris. Large vehicles sometimes need to move right to turn left leaving an appealing looking gap on the left.

I've had people overtake and immediately turn left - in fact had one on Sunday's TT. That must've cost me 10 or 15 minutes right there.

I think Paul H is on to something with the cycle lessons thing, would help raise awareness. And yes let's book 'em Danno re: white van man and red light jumpers. By all means work on more sensible ways to let traffic flow but for now I'd like to see cyclists getting nailed for £1000 for jumping the lights. Did you know every time a cyclist jumps the lights God kills a kitty? I wrote about it here: http://stopdoingdumbthingstocustomers.com/pain/friday-fury-kitty-killers/
