If the lorry does come up alongside riders like that, PROVIDED HE WAS INDICATING his intention to turn left it would be easy for a rider to ride up to his front corner to remind him that there were cyclists there. He must have seen them as he passed them before stopping.
If the vehicle was there first no cyclist would pass down between him and the kerb IF HE WAS INDICATING his intention to turn left.
The answer...... ENFORCE the use of indicators. Lorries (and buses) must be made to have them all down the side of their vehicles.
I get pi**ed off by the number of vehicle drivers that fail to indicate. They should be prosecuted. Grrrr.

Well, by safe cycling I ask myself what would it require for me to feel safe letting my 14 year old son cycle from home in Forest Hill to School in Sutton, and my daughter cycle to a nearby secondary school next year when aged 11? Answers:
A change in culture so that driving over the speed limit/ talking on the mobile/ doing your make up/reading the papers/shaving whilst driving (seen them all) is something that people wouldn't even consider doing (as with drink driving).
Giving room and time to cyclists, many of Londons roads are narrow, especially when parking is allowed on one/both sides, making a road too narrow for cars to overtake cyclists safely (i.e. so that the cyclist is not scared - i.e. by a car doing 30+ a few inchesaway from you).
Physically separated cycle lanes on main roads - e.g. around the croydon flyover areas. And at dangerous junctions e.g. junction of Devonshire road and south circular at Forest Hill.
Lower enforced speed limits on minor roads.
Removal of those speed bumps that do not form a continuous barrier across the road.
Advanced green light for bikes?
