No Boxing Day Turkey

Postby Keith » Sun Dec 26, 2010 1:19 pm

Thought I'd continue Amy's (now deleted) thread about how much birdlife you can see whilst riding your bike.

I set the rollers up in the kitchen so I could see the birds on and around the feeder in the garden ;-) Anything's worth doing to ease indoor training hours.

Birds seen included blue & great tits, collared dove, jay, house sparrows, dunnocks, blackbirds, song thrushes, coal tit, and a wren. It's very easy to see where the term pecking order comes from. The podium of pecking order, in my garden at least, goes;

    3rd Robin
    2nd Starling
    1st Greater Spotted Woodpecker. Basically nobody f***s with the woodpeckers when they're feeding.

A good session on the rollers. 90 minutes soon went by. :-)

Spot on with the pecking order. We have the same in our garden, the woodpecker is a right bully and will terrorise any other birds attempting to feed.

We don't get dunnocks or song thrushes but squadrons of gold finches and long tailed tits and a few green finches. Great tits are a plenty but no coal tits. Costs me a small fortune in bird food but I enjoy watching them come and go.

Squirrels are a pain though.

I've noticed a few jay birds lately too - stunning, well for a crow at least. And we get a green woodpecker and yep - the rest all seem to leg it when he is around. Herons feature highly too - no other birds like them and they get mobbed.

Occasionally we get a sparrowhawk enjoying dinner.

You havin' us on? Cos that sounds (and looks) wonderful 8)

My parents feed the birds in their garden and right now, even the gulls are getting their courage up to drop in - they don't normally like to come down so close to the house. Don't get green woodpeckers - don't have the right garden for them - they're probably all up the common still.

I have thought about putting a feeder out - I've got one with suckers to stick to the window but I'm doubtfuly about how well it will stay stuck - and it would keep the cat amused... However I do see a variety of birds up in the branches outside my windows - various finches, tits and a pair of greater spotted woodpeckers the other week.

Must also get a reasonable amount of birds over the back of me as I've seen plenty of twitchers heading over to the ponds they've created between the rubbish dump and the railway line - a quick count of the grey herons I could see came to about 15 :shock: so no shortage of food either.

Living close by to Little Woodcote Estate and not far from Oaks Park we are spoiled for choice in the bird department. Always something interesting whizzing about - or stopping by

Best finish to a race I've seen in a long time.
