Hello

I am currently a Master's degree student at Roehampton University researching chocolate milk as a recovery drink and 20km time trial performance and I require trained cylists to volunteer. In response for participation I am providing a VO2 max test and feedback on blood lactate.

Please could you advertise my study to any potential willing volunteers. I can begin testing now and will finish in July.

I might be interested - In the past when I have tried to enter these research projects they have focused on particular age demographics which sadly I no longer meet!

I wonder if he'd be interested in investigating the relative recovery properties of chocolate soya milk to cow's milk

I'll suggest it - but yes I do like chocolate milk - I developed a taste for it as an 12 year old working on the milk round where one of my payments in kind was a chocolate Micky - Does anyone else remember Mickys?

PARTICIPATION INFORMATION SHEET
Thank you for expressing an interest in participating in this investigation. This information sheet is designed to answer any questions you may have, but please feel free to discuss any other issues with the investigator.
What is the purpose of this study?
Post exercise recovery aims to replenish muscle and liver glycogen stores that have been depleted during exercise. Glycogen synthesis is optimal immediately post exercise but many athletes are unable to consume food after intense exercise yet are able to consume a sports drink. In the last decade there has been more interest in low fat milk or chocolate milk as a recovery drink, however there is little research on whether it can benefit performance. Therefore this study aims to compare three different recovery beverages, on a subsequent 20 km cycling time trial (TT).
Requirements for participation:
We are recruiting male cyclists/ tri-athletes aged 18-55 yrs, who train at least 2 times a week and have a minimum of 2 yrs experience in cycling. Due to the nature of the study we are unable to recruit individuals who are lactose intolerant or taking supplements. If you match our selection criteria please read on!
What is the schedule for the study?
You will be required to visit the sports science laboratory, University of Roehampton, on 4 occasions, separated by at least 5 days. The initial visit will take no longer than 3 hrs; the remaining visits will last 4.5 hrs. Please wear suitable clothing to exercise and bring your own bike for all visits!
Your height and weight will be measured prior to the first test which will be an incremental load test to exhaustion (VO2 max test). The test starts at a low load and progressively gets harder until you are unable to meet a predetermined cadence. During the test you will be required to wear a facemask to measure oxygen consumption. Blood lactate will also be taken from the finger at set intervals and recorded. The test will last approximately 12-15 min. Following a sufficient rest period you will perform a familiarisation ride of the 20 km TT. No physiological measures will be taken. A familiarisation period is performed as it has been shown to reduce intra-personal variation for test-retest reliability.
The remaining three visits will last approximately 4.5 hrs. Prior to arrival you will have been asked to keep a 24 hr food diary for the previous day. This is required to ensure you are consuming similar energy amounts before each test. You will be asked to match your dietary intake as accurately as possible. You will also be asked to arrive in the laboratories having fasted for 12 hrs, only water should be consumed during this time. In addition you will be asked to refrain from any strenuous activity 24 hrs prior to the test.
Upon arrival resting blood lactate and blood glucose levels will be taken and measured. You will then complete a glycogen depletion protocol which involves a Watt Max test followed by interval sprints. Once completed blood lactate and blood glucose levels will be taken and measured again; a 2 hr rest period follows. Immediately after completion you will be given either chocolate milk, carbohydrate

only or a placebo drink to consume, these will be provided as four volumes every 15 mins in the first hour of recovery. In the second hour and the TT, only water can be consumed. Alongside consuming the drink you will be asked to rate each for their palatability and stomach fullness, every 15 mins throughout the recovery period and pre and post TT. Blood samples will also be taken every 15 mins throughout recovery, pre TT and post TT to measure blood lactate and glucose.
Each trial follows an identical procedure but with a different recovery drink.
What are the benefits for participating?
All testing is performed using state of the art, high quality sports science equipment. From the data you will be able to obtain your VO2max, peak aerobic power, maximum heart rate and onset of blood lactate (OBLA). You will also be performing a 20 km TT, from this; mean power output and time to completion can be provided as feedback if you wish. Furthermore, as an investigator I will be extremely grateful for your participation and assistance in allowing me to complete my Master’s thesis on a topic that interests me.
What will happen to me if I take part?
You will be asked to visit the laboratories 4 times whereby you will complete the above test procedures. Data collected will then be written up for a Master’s thesis. You will be asked to sign a consent form and a general health questionnaire before participation and all results will be confidential. If successful the study has the potential to be published in a peer reviewed journal.
Are there any risks of participating?
A general health questionnaire is a compulsory procedure; if this highlights any health risks unfortunately you will be excluded from the study. A trained first aider and the studies supervisor will always be present.
Location:
The study will take place in the mornings, at the Sport and Exercise Science laboratories, Whitelands College, University of Roehampton, Holybourne Avenue, London, SW15 4JD.
Ethical and Confidentiality Considerations
This study is conducted with the approval of the University of Roehampton Ethics Committee. All results will be anonymous and all data will remain confidential in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998. As a participant you have the right to withdraw from the investigation at any point without penalty. The results from this study will be written up for subm
