This was my second open time trial ever - previous was an 18 mile sporting organised by Redhill CC. Was a bit nervous as I hadn't even done an official 10 or 25 but at the same time quietly confident knowing I had put in some long outdoor threshold-ish rides.
Off at 07:19 with Lucy 5 minutes behind me which made me quite nervous as I knew she was having an amazing season and a bit anxious she may pass me. Anyway, within the first 5 miles up to Bolney, tried to establish a good rhythm (although HR average was saying 179bpm). Then retraced along the A272 back to cowfold where we headed south along A281 to Henfield. Got out of the saddle on one hilly section and suddenly one of my left quadricep muscles became tight so had to slow down and get off the aero position. Fortunately, the pain subsided. Then onto the A24 where there were a few drags. Still felt strong and averaged 23.7mph at the half-way point.
Left turn onto the A283 towards Steyning and still felt ok - HR average went down to 176bpm in this section.
Rejoined A24 to Findon and Burbridge, my 12min man came past expectedly. Then retraced A24 back to finish (last 9 miles) where I started to open up and caught this fast lady 3 mins ahead of me - had a bit of a battle with her and pleased to say eventually crossed finish ahead of her ( she posted a 2:10). By then speed average was 24.1mph and fairly pleased with 2:06 , so had done a negative split. My quadriceps were tight though afterwards and I hobbled back into HQ.
Simon posted an increadible time (2:14) considering he punctured with approx 15miles to go and still recovering from a nasty collar bone injury, and likewise Lucy did a really good ride with 2:23.
Fastest time - Steve Dennis in new CR of 1:48
In short, a really good day and the weather was decent.
