Kent CA 100 TT

Postby Mohammad L » Sun Jun 17, 2012 2:56 pm

Robert R-E and I for Addiscombe for this blustery TT down in Kent south of Ashford. 3rd open tt for me and debut 100

Times :

Robert R-E 04:35:25
Mo 04:23:08

Extreme southwesterly wind that featured in 3 main sections of the circuit that was repeated twice - just made sure i continued to hold it out in a big gear . I averaged 23.2mph at halfway and was not tiring - getting quicker if anything but had to back off in the last 25 miles due to feelings of extreme nausea and vomit - this culminated in me vomiting 4 times successively just after the finish line - was really annoying as I could easily have 'opened up' on the last section to Lydd and taken full advantage of the headwind - lost 5-8 minutes as a result as I should have easily been on for a near 4:15 ish time. Legs were not tired but my gut was. Great ride by Rob :) and alright with my time given that nausea was outside of my control :? - checked results & 7/8 riders in front of me in a field of 45 - 50

Great rides guys, and quality for your first 100 Mo :D . Could the sickness be down to your nutrition? 100s are tough to get it right and your gut may not have liked too many gels say when at race pace. Maybe you need to experiment a bit with different foods in the long races or a different brand of drink/gel. I know Tamar said it took a while for her to find the right drink that didn't make her feel sick in the long races.

Well done Mo and Rob on your 100's :D :D

I'd be interested to know what you ate and drank for this one?? I don't remember you having much on the bike for the 50 a couple of weeks ago. I found it good to test nutrition out on a 50, with a view to riding a 100.

Before start of the event - 4 hrs ago a bowl of porridge + yoghurt; 1- 2 hrs ago a red bull and an energy gel

During the event - only 500ml of a glucose-fructose carbonated energy drink and 250ml of water ( to which I added electrolyte powder) -

(I took 4 non-glucose gels as back up but didn't need them (as I've trained my body to do long rides without consuming food/gels)

At ~ 78miles I felt extremely sick and stopped consuming both the energy drink and water with electrolytes as didn't want it to worsen - had to get off aerobars and forced to considerably reduce work rate (HR graph drops to a lower level after 03:35) despite happy legs but the nausea persisted - just was concentrating on retaining the stuff inside - absolutely awful 55-60 minutes.

I personally think I consumed enough because my legs were fine. Possibly too much energy drink and/or electrolytes (?) had an adverse effect

Yep Andrew, I may have to experiment with different energy drinks to find the one that works best for me in a 100 and that is preferrably not 'pro-emetic'

Hey Mr  my hundred time was just under two 50s, and a course pb of five minutes :D Top 15 finish out of a field of 60, I think only one or two sub four hours on a very hard day.

Nice one Rob.

That doesn't sound anywhere near enough for a 100 Mo. You need to keep topped up or your body starts running out of fuel, if you don't top up as you go then you are constantly depleting your reserves as you go. Little and often is a general rule, 100 mile TT on a 500ml bottle of carb drink isn't anywhere near enough. Your body needs fuel to work properly.
