Punctures/Pinches & Clincher Wheels

Hi Guys,

As I am new to this game, I have only found out the wheels I am running (Shimano RS20's) are clincher wheels

The problem is I have had 2 x punctures when on club runs from pinches no evidence of debris or sharp particles in the tyre or rim. I have fairly new tyre's which have covered probably 700 miles so far but no signs of wear or squaring off etc

On Sunday I had a flat from a pot hole and as it was a fast downhill section (approx 30mph), as I was trying to slow without crashing I hit another small defect in the tarmac which has dented the rim slightly. Will this be ok? or will a skilled bike mechanic knock it out?

Anther topic is it common to suffer from pinches from clincher wheels?

Flats from pot holes are normally pinch flats so no debris in tyre, the tube just gets pinched in the impact. Good tyres don't puncture very often, in fact if you check them every so often and pick out any flings then punctures are rare.

Continental Grand Prix are very good allrounders.

Re the wheel, in short don't know. I'd pop in to GBs or Bike+ as both have excellent mechanics and wheel builders. They'll be able to fix if possible or fit a new rim if required. Take your membership card and you'll get a 10% discount on parts although not on the mechanics fee.

What pressure are you running? I'm a fat git but never get pinch punctures running at around 100psi. Worth getting a track pump to get them up to pressure in the first place - and they will slowly deflate on their own.

If there's an actual dent in the rim it may not be salvageable but GBs would be able to put a new rim on and rebuild the wheel.

And learn to bunnyhop the potholes. Or go round them.

Hi Lads,

Thanks for the reply's guys the info you have provided has been very helpful. Bike is booked in for Saturday at GB's as I have my first service to tighten up cables etc. so they are going to look at the rim.

Andrew - I run continental grand prix tyres they are great all rounders I agree.

Phil - We were decending at quite a pace so bunny hopping something I was not looking for is hard but I will learn in time to look out for this as its inconvenient and costly I run 110psi in the tyres and done them with a track pump that morning.

Oh well, I will get it sorted and back out on the road hopefully for next week. Thanks once again guys for your very helpfull advice, it is much appreciated.
