Buying advice wanted: GPS stuff

Just wondered about this with the shops about to announce Christmas. The boy's collection of bicycles has grown and moving computers between them is a faff. One of the things I love about my Edge 705 is that it Just Works on whichever bike I put it on. Also he's a bit of a Strava statto and the only way he can do this at the moment is by carrying my (expensive) phone in his back pocket.

He doesn't need navigation - it drive me mental on my 705 whenever I try to use it.

Anyway, GBs seem to carry the Bryton range which look really good value - although I have heard about issues with an earlier mount and the software being a bit iffy. So possibles are:

Garmin Edge 200 - around £100
Bryton Rider 20 - £90 from GB (discount?)
Garmin Edge 500 - £140

Anybody got any thoughts?

Garmin edge 200 but if he wants HR data, he'll want the 500.
Shame you didn't post sooner as Garmin were doing £30 cashbck on Edge 200 models bought before 31 August.

Anything in particular against the Bryton Dan? I notice that one will use an ANT+ HR strap. Allegedly.

I am tempted to go Garmin as mine has survived a fair amount of abuse (especially verbal when navigating).

Not sure if he wants HR data. I suppose it would help us tell if he's really trying:

3 weeks ago a newbie attended the club run, sorry cannot remember name, who managed to negotiate up to I believe 50% off by buying 10 units from Garmin direct.
Maybe he will make his self known or you could try emailing them yourself.

How do you pair 2 or more cadence sensors on different bikes without problems Phil?

No experience of the Garmin 200 or the Bryton, but I can't fault my Garmin 500.

What's the difference between the red and blue Garmin 500 (yes, apart from the colour )? The red's more expensive but I don't see why.

The red Garmin was/is a limited edition colour.

I think when all GPS devices record data, they log it as a GPX file. Not sure it Bryton will sync easily with Strava like Garmin Communicator does but if not, it will be fairly easy to pull the gpx file off it and upload it to Strava by "browsing" for the file. I do this with my Garmin Etrex that I use for walking.

Personally, i'm a Garmin fan. Never used Bryton but i'm pretty stuck in my ways and have had quite a few Garmin devices over the years for different things. My Edge 305 packed up recently and i'll replace it next year with a 500.

I should probably update: I got him the 500 in case he wants to add cadence (for turboing). Working well.
