2013 Season - National U16 Help!

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

2013 Season - National U16 Help!

Postby Matt W » Sun Dec 30, 2012 8:05 pm

I want... no I need..! to get into college in 2014 but in order to get into the college (Loughborough) I need to be racing nationally in a sport and be recommended by a national governing body... and I only have one year to do it!!! I want to be the next Bradley Wiggins!!
All I need is help!
I know U16's have to have 6.93m gears... what does this mean?!?!
Next, I have no idea what races to enter!!! And this is a problem   If anyone spots a race or can give me some pointers that would be great!
And finally if anyone has any training tips that would be reallyyyyy useful!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I promise I will remember you when I am Knighted Sir Matt Webber!!!!!!!!!!

The gearing relates to the distance travelled for one revolution of the pedals.

Give Paul Tunnell an email, the chap who ran the hill climb so you should have his email address from that. He is a BC rep and has been involved with racing for decades. He'll know all the rules and races etc that will tick the boxes required.

Thanks Andrew, I shall give Paul an email tomorrow when I'm not so sleepy!!!

I was just wondering how I would know what actual gearing to get so I have 6.93m travel?

If you run a compact then 50x16 will give the limit or a bit under and you could fix the limit by the adjuster screws.

Best route would be to get a 46 chainring and the limit is a 14 sprocket. An ideal set up would be 46/36 chainrings with a 12-25 cassette. Gives close ratios, ideal for road racing.

Have a chat with George at GBs if you can as he'll help sort you a good set up at a decent price. TA chainrings are well made and much cheaper than Campagnolo/Shimano. GBs will also help show you how to set the limit screws and back to normal after races if you stick with a compact.

Hi guys,
I hope everyone is having a great new year... I started mine off with a GCSE Biology Exam, great to be back at school!!!

I have taken your advice, Andrew, and I went to GBs. I honestly can't remember what i'm getting but I shall post it on here later in the week. The parts are due to come in tomorrow or Friday.

Next week I have got my first ever race at the cyclopark.

Stay off the front except for when your cross the finish line :D

Seriously though don't expend energy by sitting on the front of the pack. Try and stay near the front though as any crashes that occur tend to be further back in the pack plus if a break goes you stand more chance of being in it.

Hold your line, don't go weaving all about the place as this will annoy those around you and can cause a crash. Just be aware of what's going on around you if you do want to move up towards the front.

Above all enjoy it. Just treat your first race as a learning experience and don't go mad and blow up and run out of puff trying to keep up with anyone who's faster than you. Try and be there at the end and if your feeling good go for a sprint but again HOLD YOUR LINE as this is the most dangerous part of the race. Its just an amateur race so no heroics or silly moves, just not worth it.

Make sure your fuelled up, though its not a long race so no need to be silly, nothing worse than needing a pee halfway through a race.

That's all I can think of for now :D

Good luck Matt and let us know how you get on :D

My advice would be to get a very good coach. If you want to be Nationally recognised you will have to be a very fast learner and be very dedicated to training and diet. I think you should have a word with Huw Williams as he can probably point you in the right direction.

Cheers

Crystal Palace circuit will suit you. Good for bike skills and kicking out of the corners. The ride there and back will toughen you up. Downhill on the way home. Starts April time. Others who race will know more.

Don't forget you can do Time Trials. The early season ones are all easy to ride to and not stupidly early. Plus they are not dual carriage way.

Don't forget with TTs that you will also need to get you parent/guardian to sign your forms as you are under 18.

Hey Matt, where did you get that info from? Showing that you're competitive and sporty will be beneficial and will look quite good on your Personal Statement - when applying to Colleges/Uni. But unless you're potentially an Olympic Standard Athlete I'm sure Loughborough will be more interested in your academic results .

There are lots of people that are non sporty that have studied at Loughborough - many of them engineering students. Loughborough is a popular college so they will be quite selective but I think you're putting yourself under a way too much pressure. To be a competitive National Level Junior Cyclist ( a la Germain Burton, Alex Peters or Tao Geoghegan Hart) in under a 12-18mths is gonna need a lots of natural talent as well as lots of hard work (training/racing). I don't want to put you off your cycling dream but doing well in all your exams having a strong Personal Statement with possibly relevant work experience will definitely seperate you from the pack
Alternatively - get a coach (Paul H offered); start training 5/ 6 days a week and most importantly pray you've been given the right set of parents
