Stupid ride idea

Postby Phil H » Wed Jun 05, 2013 9:10 pm

Was chatting with Tom on the way back from the TT last night and we were speculating on silly rides to do in the area. Taking the idea of the CTC Hilly 50 - which is the nastiest Surrey climbs in a short distance - I sketched up this: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/221522961

I was wondering if any of the people who know Kent better than I could improve it.

Roughly it's out from CSS over Farthing Down, up to Bletchingly, back to Caterham via White Hill. Then across the A22 through the Woldingham girls' school and up Gangers. Down Titsey, along Pilgrims' Way over Clacketts lane, over the A25 then up Toys via Puddledock, down to Brasted, up Ide, down the B road then a left above Bough Beech, up Yorks, back down the B road up Toys Hill Road, down to Brasted again, up Brasted Hill, back down to Pilgrims' Way. Along there to Titsey and right up White Lane. Down through Woldingham (could add another climb here from the bottom - not Succombs) through Caterham up Waller Lane and back across Farthing Downs.

Any suggestions for improvement? It's about 100km as it stands - which is a nice easy distance. Anyone fancy doing it later in year? It crosses itself too much to be a good Sportive route if we were to ever put one on again.

I like to call this route "Total and utter Kent".

This doesn't even scratch Kent, if you want a Krazy Kent Ride then you have to include RowDow Lane and Yorks

If I was planning a Kent ride, I wouldn't start in Surrey

Go further east and get Hubbard's Hill in there.

I live in Surrey.

Corrected original to say Yorks where I meant it.

Love it, Phil. Go for it! Get a date and advertise the ride!

Since getting back from Belgium I've been thinking of a Ronde van Addiscombe - based on the old Tour of Flanders route from the first climb - Den Ast - to the Bosberg and finish. That's 131 kms and 15 climbs. So I've worked out a route that starts at Coulsdon South and finishes at Nonnas (and takes in the Pine cafe). Exactly 131 kms and has 15 climbs! Thought we could do it the day before the Ronde van Vlaanderen - in early April sometime. A tribute to the greatest classic bike race as it once was. be great to put in a cobbled section but don't think this part of surrey has one, so a bumpy bridle path might have to do!

I will ride it soon to make sure it works. care to join me? :D :D

watch this space, Spike. No hurry but some nice weather would be good. Thinking I might fit it in between the Brighton ride weekends in July August. Saturday or Sunday. Steady pace. I'm sure we can find a mutually convenient date.

Cheers for now

I'm going to be busy over the next few weeks with my mum's funeral and stomach surgery. After that I may have regained an interest in hills - which I have had plenty of this last week. That there Galibier is a big one.

I'm keen for a bit of hilly riding myself, having got a taste for it over the last few days around Alpe d'Huez.

Did the Galibier myself on Sunday - that 15% sting in the tail after the last hairpin (Col du Lautaret side) is a killer! Still, I managed a respectable 9th overall on Strava from CdL to Galibier :D

that's a great effort, I've only ever come over from the telegraph side, then up over the Glib< its a fantastic descent down to the CdL and even better down the CdL towards bourg D.

one descent I always wanted to do was into Briancon- fantastic!, I think it was drug o kourov who flew down there back in the day.
