Probably the hardest thing on a bike i have ever done!!
1st time for me...
6hrs 38 mins on a bike no stopping (apart from 10 seconds at each checkpoint)..
i went up on the Saturday with Matt Bridge who has done the event about 5 times before.. on the way he explained how hard the two climbs were at the end. (Hardknot 30% and Wrynose). doesn't matter how many pictures you see of it or how many times people describe it.. it is unbelievable!!! Especially when its raining all day..
i couldn't even climb box hill 6 months ago without going into my 39/26 gears but thankfully my training with ex hill muncher Matt had paid off a little.. I used a 26 on the back on Sunday but wished I had a 32 at least - lots were on triples!
we set off in the 9am group - Matt said that this would be the biggest group, but the 8am group turned out to be bigger.. because of its size they managed to get to the first checkpoint 15 mins quicker.. there were about 20 in our group and a lot of very handy riders!!! I sat in for most of the first 50 miles which Matt described as flat!? Kirkstone pass isn?t that flat if you ask me. (the highest point of the course at about 40 miles in). at points we were doing 30mph!.. then we got to Honnister - sign saying no Caravans!! oh dear it was here that the 'selection' was made' my lungs and legs were on fire as i struggled to keep on.. i got dropped but managed to only drop 1 min to the first checkpoint.. as i was chasing the group down there had been a bad crash on the descent so I got held up!! (yeah right)..
my legs were like Jelly after about 50 miles but i decided to press on and try not to loose time.. from checkpoint 1 to checkpoint 2 i only lost 2 mins on the group i was in which i was chuffed with cos i was riding on my todd.. at about 80 miles i felt great but after 90 odd miles you run up to Hardknott... when i saw it i though it was both passes together and asked a rider from my group who i caught at the bottom.. 1.5 miles of pain... just managed to stay on the bike... the 30% part - oh my word.. someone who was walking up it said you have to sprint up that else you will not get up it... not exactly sprinting but 5 mph it as good as up there.. just made it!! then it kicks again!!!!!... after that its a hairy descent and across a flat section then you have Wrynose which is not nice after 30%...had to use the whole road to get up it.. people on the roads were shouting encouragement - but the whole thing becomes a blur.. head down and go..
Then 6 miles to the finish which was fairly fast with another hill!!!
What a great event - you have to do it!!!
112 mile and approximately 4100m of climbing (depending which GPS system you use).. if you cant hills climb before it ? you would have learned by the time you finish.. was good to beat some of the local hill munchers for a sprinter like myself? I think I lost about ½ stone that day alone..

Tim, 6hr 38 is cracking considering it's your first outing and you're training on Box Hill, Toys etc. Not that these hills are small but when you're at the bottom of Hard Knott you just look up and think - sh1t. Getting up it without walking is a challenge in itself. If you're up for it next year then you'll be flying.
I totally underestimated how hard it was going to be last year and got spat out the back. This year I was a bit wiser and didn't go too fast early on. Left with the 8.00 and managed to get out front on Honister, to avoid the carnage, and from there on it was me, 2 Honister boys and a couple of others. Managed to get away on Hard Knott and then it was head down for a sprint to Coniston.
Still can't believe that I came in third. Left early to go shopping so I missed the presentation.
Tim, at the moment I'm living near Ulverston. If the Lakes are planning to do the Fred Whitton course during the summer then I'll post something on here. The scenery is pretty spectacular but it's hard to appreciate when you're vision is blurred.
Sylv, Cristalp is harder. On road you can cruise and relax but off road is constant punishment. Good luck with The Grand Fondo and I hope you get good weather.
