Article on cycling in the thirties

Rode to my parents' for lunch today and Mum showed me this article on cycling in the thirties in the Essential Surrey magazine - shows there's nothing new under the sun :D Traffic, the cyclist instinct to find tea...

The hard copy had a couple of different pics - including one of cycle racing at Brooklands.

Forgot to say that my Dad has decided not to renew his CTC membership - he's been a member continuously since 1954 (he got a certificate in 2004 from the CTC congratulating him on 50 years as a member).

I recently had a CTC certificate congratulating me on 10 years' membership, Amy. Doubt if I'll ever equal your dad!

I've been a member since 1970 and I haven't received a single certificate :!:

Found some more historic stuff on cycling in Surrey.

This is quite an entertaining write-up of the Ripley Road history.

This made me laugh ““Riding the Ripley road” was so popular that it came in for criticism in some quarters. In June 1885, Wheel World sniffed: “The Ripley Road craze is positively harmful to cyclists; men would be infinitely better in all respects for varying the direction of their journeyings.””

And this - http://www.roadswerenotbuiltforcars.com/category/women-and-cycling/ - is hilarious.

And as for this, http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS18990515.2.64&l=mi&e=-------10--1----0-- thankfully there isn’t quite such blatant sexism around any more.
