So I lied about having a live feed of Strava segments on garmin devices with Strava premium. This is only for mobile apps.

So really there's no point going premium or getting a bluetooth enabled device.

Used the 800 properly for the first time yesterday on the Essex Spring Lambs sportive. Very impressed. I downloaded the course, having previously downloaded routable maps with contours from talkytoaster.com. You get turn by turn directions with a warning bleep 30 secs before each junction, and a double bleep at T-10 seconds. For the whole ride I used the map rather than the multi-display training pages that show everything from the standard speed, distance, etc to gradient, elevation, altitude, HR and cadence. As the new 810 is out there are decent deals on the 800s, mine was from Evans as a birthday pressie but as they price match it's worth shopping around and using this facility

The Edge 1000 has just been announced/released. Adds Wi-Fi which is quite cool, but bigger and heavier and even more expensive. I struggle to get the 810 on my stem as I am short and run 90mm or 100mm ones so probably wouldn't get this bad boy on at all.

In case you did not know, there is an extension which you can put on your handlebar for the garmin.
IMO it's expensive for what is simply a clip. But it allows for a safer quick glance at the display ... so I bought it!

I've had my garmin for nearly two years now but use it only occasionally because I can't change the factory display permanently. I know how to change the display to what I want to see (cadence, elevation) but after switching off and switching the garmin on the next time, the display goes back to the factory settings.

Do you (or does anyboby) know if the settings can be changed permanently? (That's the reason the garmin remains in a drawer :-( I couldn't be ar$%d to fiddle about with the gadget everytime I go for a ride.)

Hi @ge0rge, yeah i have an out front mount, but prefer squeesing it onto the stem to save space on the bars for other stuff like lights etc.

You can definately change the profile to have different and customised screens on the garmin. I've done it on my 810. Which model have you got?

I have the 810. I would really like to know how it's done.
after switching it on, I tap the menu -> tools (Spanner) -> Bike Settings -> Training Pages -> Timer Pages - Page 1 (which has 5 fields).
At that point I can up or down the number of fields. (say I up it to 6 fields)
Then I select the field I want to change (say Heading to Cadence). Tap on the green tick (OK button I guess).
Then exit the tools and back to the main display screen.
At that point, the display is as I want it (6 fileds displayed) and remains OK until I switch the Garmin off.
When I switch it back on the next time, my customised screen has disappeared and I am back to 5 fields display.
I've looked at what else I could do/check/OK but can't find anything.
I am either missing something that you know or maybe I've got a duff sofware version (?)

Sounds right to me, sorry haven't got the unit to had to look at it, but I'm certain I removed the default training pages 'Race' and 'Ride' and just left the one and only I created which might be different to what you have done? Maybe if you have more than one it will start the unit back in the standard default one.

You can also colour the training pages. I put the ACC yellow on my page so perhaps that will show you which setup you’re in currently. I think there was an arrow bar which let you swap between the training setups when you had more than one. It’s just like the one for swapping bikes I think just under that one. I haven't got that bar anymore because I have just the one set of training pages.

Only other thing I can think of is if you have left it in the draw so long that the battery goes flat and you lose the settings but that's unlikely.

I know we're men and don't read the manual but http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/Edge810_OM_EN.pdf from reading page 11 it sounds like you've done it right.

The bar I was trying to explain is shown on page 2 in the image of the unit is in profile 'Road' (must have been 'road' and 'race' originally not 'ride' like I said.

So on that unit it has two activity profiles which you can see from the size of the blue strip above it. This is also a blue activity profile, I think 'Race' was red.

Would be interesting to see if you have three profiles, the original two plus your customised one?

Thanks for all the suggestions/advice. Sounds to me that my Garmin has an old software version as I don't see the things you mentioned.
I am currently in sunny Spain and I will connect my Garmin to their site when I get back at the end of the month.... to check whether my software is up to date and if not whether there is a facility to update it.
Anyway, thanks again.

This bloke has done a fairly extensive review on the 800:

also look at this one:

should cover most of your questions re settings etc.
