Boix Hill Challenge

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

I spoke to a couple of people on the CTT London South district committee last night, and gleaned the following: Neither Box Hill or Tilburstow Hill are currently approved CTT hill climb courses, so that pretty much rules them out for this year at least. Ranmore Common Road is an approved course and is only a stones throw from Box Hill, so would be a good alternative. The suggested date of Saturday 30th September is OK, as there are no other events scheduled for that day.

If people still want to do Box Hill then it could be done as a BC event (as per the 3-day Rob mentioned) rather than a CTT event, although that might bring other complications such as the requirement for race licences etc.

Or "The Third Way"; people can just time themselves as they ride it, and have it as a completely unofficial "non-race".

You might do. Last year one of the Surrey League road races had a time trial as one of the stages and it was held on Box Hill. Maybe it is worth asking someone from the Surrey League how they did it and then we can follow suit.

The start was not right at the bottom, it was near the layby along the first drag. The finish was further up than the Cafe, think it was the layby after the turn at the top past the normal catching your breath area.

As a lot of the club seem to be riding up box hill on a regular basis I think it would be great to do the Box hill event. 12pm would be a bit of a late time due to traffic, as with other TTs I think it would have to be a lot earlier in the morning than that.

After the TT we should then take the top 5 fastest TTers and then get them to race up road race style, that would be fun to watch.

Cheers

Marek....

I reckon we should hold the hill-climb comp up Sa Calobra. I've done it in 50 mins before but it took me 1 hour this year.

We could even try having the freewheel comp there but we may get wet!!

Just thought of another alternative if we want to have a club hill-climb championship. Rather than organise our own, we could just designate an open event (like the Catford & Bec events) as being the event to decide our championship. No hassle for us to organise, but the downside is that it would be more expensive for those entering, and they would have to be organised enough to send in an entry form in advance.

I'm sure the box hill event is perfectly do-able.
Probably need to contact the council in Dorking aand ask their advise.
I watched the TT Rob talked about last year and it was a great event.
However, I would have started lower down and finished at the cafe.

mmm ! think it should be a club only event. Its got to be Box Hill surely - everyone knows the climb its not too steep - therefore 'a power rider' has about the same chance as 'a 60 kilo man'... We really need to to shake this club up a bit!. How can a club of 200 plus members not have an end of season Hill Climb? I'm happy to help out if others will join me :)

Box Hill would be a great hill climb... though I'm nowhere near 6 minutes, nearer 9-10.

Would certainly get a lot of riders out too...

This is a fantastic idea!

Being from Epsom i ride that little bump eveytime i go riding. Though i think if a TT were held it should start from as far down as the Burford Bridge Hotel. That way the steepest and hardest first km would be included. Then finish by the cafe at the top, otherwise it flattens out to much, which would mean too much recovery time for the power riders!

Based on the start/finish locations i suggested i would hope to clock 6 to 7 mins, but i'd be astounded if anyone beat 6mins.

Bring it on!

If it happens - and wouldn't it be great if it did, given the number of times it gets a namecheck here - I will def be cheering you all on from the roadside. Box Hill holds a special place in my heart as it was when we reached the top - still on our bikes - that Ajay proposed to me!

Box Hill would be a gr8 little intra club challenge - if it were an open event though you'd have to put in something that is more of a challenge for a competitive rider, and something with real spectator appeal.

Personally I'd go for Toys Hill (near Westerham) 'cos it's pretty steep, has some soul destroying bits where you think you're at the top and then it gets steeper. It's got a downhill on the other side (going towards Brasted).

Logistically it's not bad - quiet road, but is still wide enough to accommodate spectators and other road users - parking area near the top - and most importantly, there's a pub at the top of the climb - a just reward to the victims - I mean competitors.
