How old Are You Then?

Postby Toks » Fri Jun 02, 2006 11:12 am

In keeping with my tuesday/thursday racing regime I decided to do the LVRC race at Eastway yesterday. Well I guess I should be flattered by this, but at the signing on table I was asked for my date of birth despite handing over LVRC licence. At the start of the race I was getting some odd looks (nothing to do with my colour I'm sure); then at the end two guys suggested that I was possibly a ringer.

Now as you fellas in your forties know its not something that you willing advertise. At the end of the race I told one of the blokes that I was 41 and why indeed would I say that I was 41, if I wasn't. After all its not like you get a special racing prize for having entered you fifth decade. Anyway the race was approximately 3rd cat pace and I just used it for training :?

I've not long turned 40 (not long enough to have got used to the idea, at any rate).

The most disappointing thing (so far) is that when I tell people my age, they don't react with the shock and utter disbelief that I'd hoped for...

I can relate to this Toks, as everytime I go into a pub they still insist on seeing proof that I'm over 18. Why would I say I was 25 if I wasn't?

Not right is it?

Ha Ha :D :D Sean mate this year is gonna fly by. Telling people that you work with who aren't even thirty yet that you're forty odd is a struggle I'll tell ya! Some people actually feel sorry for you!. I remember sometime in the last century when i was about 15 and my cool trendy Aunt got back from New York wearing `Nike' trainers. I think she was about 36 at the time and I thought she was a little too old to be wearing them. Yeah I know, don't say it

You can legally get married this year and have been born in the 90's. Now that really makes you feel old.

I have known that Toks is 40+ for some time having seen it in sportive classifications - but don't worry, age discrimination really only sets in after 50 and you still have 9 years of growth and development before you hit that glass ceiling of others' expectations - after that it is all the more fun disproving the relationship between age and performance. In short Toks, I expect your pulling power on the bike (and possibly elsewhere) to annoyingly persist for some years to come.

I turn 35 this week. I'm hoping the gray in my hair will make people react with shock and disbelief. :D

Nikes are so last century. I think the current fad with those youngsters is to wear long black socks with your sandals.
