Chertsey 3rd Cats

Postby Marek » Sat Jun 03, 2006 7:16 pm

Fun race today, shame for the 4th cats in the first race, a crash on the first corner wiped out one of the ladies and they had to abandon the race to clear up the mess which meant they only did about two laps.

I hoped this was not an omen for the 3rd cats race. The pace was high as ever at Chertsey due to the flat nature of the course. I did a bit of work near the front with Simon H and Mark Cole also well up there. After a few laps I decided to sit in as every time I tried to get away or others did it was coming back together very quickly.

Sitting in at Chertsey is great as normally big field and you can fly around the course without too much effort.

With around three laps of the 20 to go one guy went off the front on the first little hill. I decided that this looked like quite a good move as the peleton were not really reacting. I went after him and soon we were working well together. I was really red lining it and my HRM had me at 96% heart rate for the whole of the next lap. We seemed to be well away from the peleton, later reports were that Richard Munday, Simon H and Mark Cole were blocking for me which was very good of them.

The bell went and I was dieing, man I was killing myself on the last lap, as we got to the two humps my partner in escape started to move away, I was slowing and he rightly had to keep the pace up to stay away. I did my best to stay with him. Into the final straight and he was only about 20 yards ahead. I was giving it everything I had and then all of a sudden with around 25 metres to go the peleton came sweeping past and I got a lowly placing. Man that was frustrating, the guy who I escaped with managed to hold on for the win, if only I had been able to hold his wheel I would have got second.

Ah well, racing again tomorrow so who knows what will happen.

Cheers
