I was a bit nervous, having done well on my first race, but knowing that this could have been due to the low turnout with the treacherous conditions, and the fact that some of the very fit riders are often unnerved when it gets muddy.
We started clockwise (or "the wrong way" as they call it) with a long stretch of road that went all the way to the sharp climb at the back of the circuit. My lack of leg power meant I watched helplessly as several riders passed me on the road just before we got to the climb, making it in about 8th or 9th to the top, but with the leaders still in sight I decided not to get in the red at the risk of blowing out, and instead try to slowly make my way back towards the front, if possible before we met our first lapped riders, which can create big gaps if you get stuck in a section where you can't safely overtake (and there were lots of them, with the grass still not mowed down).
Pretty soon it was a small group of four of us, with race # 1 winner Simon Turner in the lead. For some reason one Dynamo rider got off his bike on one short sharp climb (maybe he hadn't pre-ridden the course, which often doesn't take that climb and carries on on the flat), and just before a tight corner I passed (a bit close admittedly) the fourth guy to get ahead of him onto the next section, a steep downhill followed by a long flat along the canal.
Soon enough it was just Simon and me, from behind he looked like he was just cruising along, but try as I did I couldn't really get to the front for a whole lap. We had time to exchange a few words, turned out he'd done the Trek 100km race at the weekend and was feeling knackered. It didn't look like it. With the race at half-way point, I thought maybe if I push it real hard from now there is a chance he will tire out towards the end. But I wasn't feeling strong enough that day, so instead took my turn at the front, with Simon in my wheel until he got to the front again. With just half a lap to go, I tried getting to the front again, but on one of the last climbs he attacked back, and before I knew it he'd overtaken a couple guys on the downhill, creating a gap. There was still a bit of way to go, so I pushed it hard onto the BMX circuit, getting closer and closer. One tricky little down bit, a hairnpin on the grass and a few tens of meters, damn didn't make it, second again, will have to try harder next time.
Richard finished 15th in Masters and Will 21st, Simon got 3rd in Singlespeed, and Grahame 15th in Veterans.
