My race report. This week was better - I only felt like I was going to die, not like I wanted to die! (sorrry if this is in bad taste/offends anybody). Fairly consistent lap times, and managed to survive until about 1/3 way round final lap before being lapped by Sylvain.

I seemed to spend an abnormally large amount of time alone on the track considering there were 200 people along the 3.1 miles.

Next week I hope to be able to climb the dizzy heights and reclaim a top 100 finish.

The start line is busier than ever tonight, the limit of 200 riders reached, and the Masters field 70-odd strong. Standing next to Joel I have spotted all my usual scarecrows of the first few rounds - Simon, Stuart, Mark, Matt. Plus someone else who looks very fast, skinsuit and all, and who I soon find out is Trek-sponsored Mike Jackson (who might remember riding with some of my club back in the '80s!). This isn't going to be an easy one, especially with a mighty wind and an unusual grassy climb finish.

Bang goes the start which must be my worst so far, you'd think I'd know how to clip in by now. I'm stuck behind at least ten riders as we try and squeeze onto the first portion of dirt, elbows almost rubbing. It is going to be an eventful race.

I can see the first riders moving away as I try passing people, if I don't get back on their wheel quick enough I might never see them again. Within half a lap I am back onto a group of four, but learn that Jackson is already way ahead. We hammer it and I am feeling OK, I have swapped my retro Syncros crankset which was giving me shifting headaches (as well as a horrendous Q-factor) for a slightly less retro XTR, without the small ring (not needed at Beastway), and put on lightweight summer tires which really make a difference on the climbs. I've even got the lycra shorts out, anything to gain a few seconds ... Joel is passed next but Matt is unusually resistant and sticks with us. Simon has to get off the bike on a sharp climb, so I tell the others to try and get away from him.

Just before a tricky downhill with a sharp right turn, Mark who hasn't pre-ridden the course pulls a whopping OTB thinking that the course goes straight on as the previous week. Looks hilarious but I'm hoping he's ok as I carry on. Later Stuart has to stop to put his chain back on. So I am pushing the big ring on my own now to try stay ahead of them all. I can see Simon not too far back again, with Matt just behind. The heavy traffic means constant overtaking and the frustration of being stuck behind people on the narrow bits, especially when you are being chased. The Junior races have been started just as we finished a lap and there are myriads of young riders to pass. One thing I've noticed is that the fast Experts' lap times are consistent the whole way through - they don't seem to lose time with the "backmarkers" on later laps - I'm always worried about taking someone off while overtaking, so am probably not being agressive enough!

It is much chillier than previous weeks, which is just as well as I only get the chance to drink twice during the race - I often have to gulp down a whole 750ml bottle on a hot day. On the last lap I keep a worried eye behind my back. Simon and Matt seem to be getting closer, but eventually I don't get caught, finishing in second place waaayy behind Jackson - at least I get a few more points than Mark and Stuart with who we were neck to neck in the average rankings. Only three days till we meet again on the course at SSMM ...

The other Addiscombe - Simon Day wins the Singlespeed class for the first time, 5 seconds ahead of Ally Rowe, well done! In the Masters, Joel is 8th, Will 23rd, Aodan 28th and Kevin 46th (he says he will be doing Crystal Palace instead from next week!). In the Vets, another big field today, Grahame finishes 22nd despite feeling under the weather.
