Fate deals a lousy hand

Tragic. I was actually thinking about the fact this kind of thing could happen on our wet ride today, before I read about this accident tonight. Nothing much you can do to prevent it sadly, apart from keeping tight to the left of the road and in single files when the roads get narrow and twisty. Won't help much if the oncoming vehicle goes awol, but could save lives if it is just speeding and/or driving in the middle of the road like some people seem to do.

This is a dreadful accident and really brings home how vulnerable we can be on the road.

I echo Sylvain's thoughts in that we must keep as disciplined as we can when we ride in groups especially when they get narrow and twisty.

Dreadful news, but not suprising unfortunately. As Sylvain says, it's easy to imagine a similar incident happening anywhere.

Having said that, I'd hope that if I was in a car in the middle of winter on an untreated rural road I wouldn't be doing 50mph, whether it's within the speed limit or not. I wonder if the 'not excessive' quote from the police was regarding the speed limit or the conditions.

Quite right, David - 'accident' indeed. The excellent RoadPeace (http://www.roadpeace.org), who incidentally are now working with Rhyl CC, doesn't use the word at all in this context - calamities like this are an inevitable consequence of any car-centric culture.
