On a perfectly glorious summer's evening approximately thirty riders were on the start line for the 3/4th race at Palace. With Tim in the E12 race it meant there were only three agreeables in action: Kieran, Jack and myself? The pace for the first twenty minutes was fairly steady. I put in a little dig on lap 12 and Dulwich Paragon?s Kevin Knox jumped away with me. We didn?t gain more than a handful of metres and normal service was soon resumed.
A lap later Quentin Tring (Brixton Cycles) also decided to stretch his legs and managed to get a thirty metre gap, but again the pack were wise to the game. There were also attacks from Joe Stegers (LD's, gave me a much needed push last week - nice guy) and another Dulwich rider all comfortably absorbed by the bunch.
With around 15 of the 27 laps to go someone younger and stronger than the rest of us decided it was time to start his evening?s work. I bet there?s probably a number of teenage tearaways in Crystal Palace area but on the cycle circuit, with two wins already to his name Corridori's, Erick Rowsell?s clearly 'the Daddy'.
Unlike his teenage counterpart, Micheal Wilmot, over at Hillingdon, Erick doesn't like to win in the company of others. A solo mission was on the cards all night and I did try to forwarn the big guns about his predictable departure once we got past the halfway point of the race.
I was about 10 riders back when it happened. I saw him sprinting down towards the hairpin, stomping up the little drag and then flying down the descent. We didn?t know it at the time but from that moment onwards we were racing for second spot. With a gap of roughly 15secs it was gonna require an above threshold (your average power output in a 60min all out effort)) from at least four guys to bring him back
A small group of 4 or 5 of us Jack, myself, Kevin Knox, Quentin Tring and David Gardner of London Dynamo immediately started chasing. Although others joined the chase they were in a couple of cases actually hindering our efforts by breaking up the rhythm. Either they were not pulling thru when they should or they were sitting on when they should be pulling. I was very vocal, coaxing and cajoling throughout but alas it was to no avail.
We almost brought young Mr Roswell back two or three times but then people sat up or failed to pull thru which allowed the hotshot junior to just power away again. On the bell I was completely spent and a lap later couldn?t really contest the sprint. A great race nevertheless and of course excellent training. Results don?t always give a true picture of the race but then again that?s Road Racing? Another fantastic ride by Jack and also an excellent performance from a fast improving Keiran?Sean it was good to see you down at Palace last night, thanks for the support
