BWAY#10: second Addiscombe win this week :-)

Finally managed to win a Beastway race last night. Well chuffed about that, I really wanted to win that last ever round!
Worked really hard for it, probably the hardest I ever had in a 1h race. Pretty much all the fast guys were there and the field was immense (225 people!). Did "a George" on my own from lap 1, opened a gap and kept hammering till the end, but was in the red the whole time and constantly fearing I'd blow up or get caught. Being in the lead always makes things that little bit easier though. Woohoo less than 0"40 down on first Expert, and 1"17 up on second Master

Simon got a 2nd in Singlespeed, less than a minute down on the stupid-fast Graham Pentney. Richard made his comeback after weeks off the bike. Grahame raced despite having to monitor the first bit of singletrack as the races were being started.

I enjoyed my ride.

Due to a course marking/marshal briefing error, I had to go to the first corner to make sure that the large groups starting (Masters, Sport/singlespeed, Vets/Grand Vets) went "under the alps" rather than over them. I joined in after the vets had come through and got held up in several log-jams before really getting started. I think this cost me a minute or two from where I would normally be (I like to get a fastish start to avoid 1st lap congestion).

I then managed to push quite hard, but control my pace and passed more people than passed me for a change. Quite pleased to have finished so high up the overall field after a hindered start. I still had something left for a pseudo-sprint up the final climb before the finish.

After the finish, I was relaxing by my car when my throat suddenly felt very painful. After a moment's panic about choking, I realised I'm probably starting a cold. Confirmed by a nose full of gunk this morning and that I'm perspiring away just sitting at my desk.

Maybe I'll miss the club run on Saturday.

Congrats! I was watching on Weds and could tell that Sylv and Simon were absolutely going for it. Got a couple of OK pics but they were just going too damn fast, will post when I get round to it.

Cheers would love to see the pics and my angry race face. Like I said I can't remember working so hard in a short one-hour race like this before and I was totally spent by the end, coming to the end of lap two I thought I'd loved to have heard the bell at that point, but there were another two laps before that! Being at the front, which I'm not so used to, has two effects: one you can't really see how far back the chasers are, so you just have to keep going as fast as you can hoping they won't be catching up. You can hope to rely on the fact that if the chasers are in a group - unlike on the road - it can hinder their speed. Ie sometimes you just tend to sit in someone's wheel and the pace can kind of relax and try to recover a bit before attacking towards the end, also it takes longer for a group to overtake people, to negotiate turns etc. So in places where I usually tend to try recover a bit, like the road sections and the tight singletrack at the back, I just kept going just as hard, and I think that's what made the difference.
The other effect is that it boosts your morale and makes the pain a little easier on you - this increasing as you get closer to the end of the race. It being the last round of the series as well as the last round ever, and the fact I hadn't managed to win one previously, added to the motivation. That race wouldn't have changed the overall results though. Oh and there's a third effect, which seems to affect me more than others, is that I tend to not look at the tape enough and wander off course when there is no-one in front! Last week I tore the tape twice after the chicanes, the track was dead straight but somehow I wanted to get on the road! This time at the end of the first lap, on the first berm of the BMX track, somehow I almost took a left halfway into the berm (like we've done a few times before). I stopped in time but lost a bit of time! There were a few guys just back from the Transalp, and I was wondering whether they'd be slower due to being tired from it, or stronger for having raced so hard the previous week.
