Seized carbon seatpost ideas?

Postby Jim B » Mon Sep 11, 2006 9:48 pm

Just realised that my seatpost no longer needs a bolt to hold it into the frame.

Tried a fair bit of force but no joy.

Took the botton bracket out and sprayed a bit of chain lube down the seat tube which made no difference.

Rather than putting it in the vice and risking bending the frame and/or snapping the seatpost, I'm up for any suggestions.

There's nothing actually wrong with the seatpost height now, so if there are no easy tricks I think I'll just leave it.

Hmm, interesting - I'll try that. I've got the same problem and Brixton Cycles told me that it'd take someone a day or more of chipping and chiselling to get it all out.

Jim

I had the same problem a few months ago with a alluminium seatpost in a steel frame.

I tried stilsons and upside down in a vice but I feared snapping the frame.

In the end I cut the seatpost almost in line with the frame.

I took off the blade from a hacksaw and carefully made 2 cuts down inside the seatpost opposite each over, wrapping tape around the blade to protect my hand.

Eventually after 2 hours of hacksawing the seatpost fell into 2 pieces which I easily removed.

Cheers Guys,
think I'll try giving it a tap with a mallett first. If that doesn't do anything, I'll probably just leave it.
