Right folks, looks like there's enough people to make it worthwhile, so it's on. I won't be sending out a start sheet, it will be entry on the line, so you can choose who you want to chase up the hill. Hopefully more people will feel the urge and turn up on the day.

It's the minor road that runs north-south, with the hairpin bend at the top. As there's not much room to hang around at the bottom, the meeting up and signing on place will be at the top, near the church. Anyone driving out should also park up near the church on the grass verge.

For the handicap competition it would be helpful if you know how much you weigh; stones & pounds, kilos, or tons will do.

First rider will start at 12 or shortly afterwards, so arrive before that to sign-on and have a recce of the course.

Lastly, a pusher-off will be required, let me know if you can help out.

Thinking of riding my time trial machine now that my wheel has finally arrived. Absolutely pointless for a hill climb but how else am I going to get out on it this year..........

Fixed or not too fixed? Any thoughts on this yet Mike?

How about including the bikes in the equation!

Anyway I'm about 65kg and will be on a steel framed bike with triple chainset!

I've never done a hill climb, but thinking about it now it must be very very painful (not to detract anyone). The closest thing I've done is the one-lap challenge at Eastway. This took me about the same time as I'm expecting the 1km climb to take (2"30~3"), and by the end of it my throat felt like sandpaper, and I had a nasty taste of blood in my mouth. And that was on a flat-ish course ...

Box Hill takes 6" or more so requires easing back at some point, as well as the fact that there's generally a few of us in each other's wheel rather than in TT mode, plus we're only fighting to be the first in the cake-shop queue.

So can we just join the clubrun on Saturday and make the ride go to Ranmore Jon?

The traditional thing to do is to fall off totally exhausted just after the finish line and then puke (that's not compulsory though).

And yes, bring the clubrun via Ranmore, that's why I made the start time 12 o'clock, so people could compete or spectate on the way back from Charlwood.

63kg, but I'll just ride up leisurely for another last place finish, methinks - even if I go 100% it won't make much difference.

Will probably just ride down to Box Hill and do reps, then go to Ranmore and do reps... then do the hill climb. Nothing like some cycling self-harm before I go off to uni.

This all brings back memories from me youff! did this climb as a 16 year old in an interclub event with the Clarence wheelers. Distance 1000yds time 2mins 38sec (Won event and broke club record)on 66" fixed. Still can remember the pain!!
Tips, don't try and cut the bend at the top it's alot steeper that way, and watch for wheel spins if wet!

The winner did it at an average speed of 22.78 kph. I guesstimated a power output of 470watts for 20kph for me so for 22.8kph??

my names adam, and i weigh 72kg (well at least i did before i went to uni and drank solidly for 3 weeks, whilst not having my bike with me to ride either!) so im just hoping to get up it.

any form i may have had from my short racing season this summer has probably vanished into the haze of the last 21 evenings...

in fact, ill just be happy to make it round the club run and get to the start line!!!

Well, back from riding. Overslept so missed the club run (I'm still on Greenwich Student Time). Roads were ok, though wet and a bit gravelly/leaf-strewn in some areas.

Through Westhumble, I turn a corner and there's a 100m stretch of flooded road; cars were struggling to get through it. After rubbing my eyes to make sure it was real, I managed to skirt by most of it on the sodden bank to the right, and continued on my merry way to Ranmore Common.

Actually, by pure chance, had a disposable camera on me so took some photos of the flood and parts of Ranmore, and the turning, which was all gravelly and leafy.

Quickly became clear that the road was not in the best condition. Climbing it was doeable, though I had to be constantly vigilant for stones the size of my fist, as well as gravel, leaves and general detritus all washed into the road. Made the summit about 11.30 and nobody was about. Hung around for a bit then gingerly "descended", though I walked the first section for fear of punctures and then descended brakes on. Definitely an unrideable descent.

About 11.45, ran into two Addiscombe's, one being Paul Tunnell, as he skilfully negotiated the flood zone about 4 times faster than me. He was going to check it out but I'd already decided the road was too dangerous. Presumably, it was cancelled, though I didn't stick around to find out... absolutely crazy sodden roads.

Quite annoying really, as I was hoping to do another ACC event before going to uni next week. Oh well, Mother Nature's a bitch today
