ACC team at Bec Hill Climb?

A Place to idle the day away talking about anything you fancy. Expect to find cycling and non cycling topics inside

Postby Jon H » Sat Oct 07, 2006 9:20 pm

I've done the deed and put entries for both in the post today.

I'm fairly sure my road bike's lighter than my TT bike, so I'll be using that. Going out for a recce tomorrow, then I'll be busy drilling holes in stuff.

There was a very light Look 595 at the Cycleshow today, but I couldn't manage to sneek it out without getting caught.

Did you guys write the cheque to the name of Gary Beckett?
Thanks

I wrote mine to "Bec CC".

Had a ride out yesterday and went up both hills. They're steep and hurt a lot. I'm considering taking off the 53 ring, as I won't be needing it. I also won't be needing the first 8 sprockets on my cassette either. I can see why the hill climb experts ride fixed now.

Thanks it's in the post now.

At this rate Jon you can take off the brakes and the front mech too!

It says Titsey starts with 1/6 and ends at 1/4, not sure the momentum of a fixed would carry you all the way to the top, especially as the further you get the harder it feels?

If you didn't know the hill is here
Turn the elevation on (large) to scare yourself. If memory serves me the sign at the bottom says 17%.

Andrew, White Lane is showing in blue on your link. Isn't it Titsey Hill we're going up rather?

I think they call it the Titsey hill climb to help people find it, but it is up White Lane, Titsey is way too busy. White Lane is your typical narrow, tree covered English hill, - short and very steep.
If anybody who has entered hasn't ridden this hill I'd recommend you try and get over there before the event for a shoofty/test. I managed to get over tonight (bit misty/dark/scary) but worth the trip and the pain.

Are you entirely sure Andrew?
"starts with 1 in 6 and ends at 1 in 4" sounds more like Titsey than White.

Unless I get my hills wrong, Titsey is the one we went down on Huw's Weds ride, and White the one we went up after the sharp left turn almost at the bottom of Titsey, no?

And I think I read somewhere that the road would be closed.

Andrew's right.
Titsey is a big main road and White Lane is a small lane leading off Titsey at the bottom.

Yes, but I think it's Titsey the climb is up!

Unless I see it written black on white somewhere?

I know what you mean Sylvain it confused me first time. I've been over to spectate a few times and as Marco says it gets chock full of cyclists all trying to balance on the hill in cleats  . It's quite something watching a small local race with that many people by the side of the road all shouting and cheering.

Can I have a hefty push as well please

Some of the competition seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Backstedt's year of woe continues

Liquigas rider Magnus Backstedt must be starting to wonder what he did to warrant such bad luck in 2006. The big Swede crashed on the opening stage of his first race of the season, suffering an almost career-threatening knee injury.

After rehabilitation, Backstedt fought his way back to fitness so quickly that his Liquigas team had him on the start line of the Tour de France in Strasbourg. He finished his season well and was looking forward to a busy winter on the track only for everything to come unstuck once again.

While preparing behind the derny for the madison, Backstedt and his young Swedish protegé Freddie Johansson of the Plowman Craven Racing Team tangled on a high speed change. As a result both riders were taken to hospital.

Backstedt suffered a severely separated shoulder due to the impact, but was discharged on Friday night. The injury will take some weeks to heal and doctors are still considering whether to operate on the 2004 Paris Roubaix winner. Backstedt said, "It was just one of those things that can and does go wrong with madison changes sometimes. As soon as I sat up from the crash, I knew I'd done something pretty serious to my shoulder." Twenty-year-old Johansson remains in hospital with some neck injuries and a broken bone in his hand. He will undergo a CT scan and further tests on Monday.
