This might be of interest - it seems Ryan Air are being forced to
accept liability for damage to sports equipment including bikes.
Could apply to other airlines too.

Previously the small print on the web site excluded bikes etc from
baggage claims.

Squeezeejet really screwed my bike en route to Ventoux. They totally scunnered me gears and the bit that connects the handlebars to the frame. Did over £130 damage and made the ascent and descent of the giant of provence somewhat "interesting". After six months persistence they paid up.....in full!!
