Another idea on the titanium front; I've seen good reports about Setavento, custom built and cheaper than Merlin/Moots/Litespeed etc.

Alan, leave the plastic bikes to the kids! Steel's real, and I quite fancy one of these...

Although it doesn't look like funds will be available for a new bike for me just yet, maybe sometime next year, I have been looking at pretty much all the bikes out there for some time, and I seem to have come to a conclusion that at the end of the day it all comes down to aesthetics.
One frame may get a slightly better write up than another, or someone will say you should go for so and so frame, but when you think that at the top end of the market, nearly all the manufacturers mentioned so far have their bikes ridden by a pro team. So to the likes of us mere mortals, the slight differences from one frame to another would probably not be noticeable or relevant.

Decisions Decisions:
Groupsets - quite easy, usually 2 to choose from, although I know Alan you are looking at the SRAM kit - very nice.
Finishing kit - all much of a muchness - doesn't get noticed anyway.
Wheels - Generally the more you pay the more you get. Again at the top end, all should be good. Quite a tough one this, I'm still undecided. Weight, strength, carbon, deep section etc etc. This is probably a tougher decision than choosing a frame

So which frame?
Look Colnago Time Orca Specialized Cervelo Cannondale Giant Bianchi Seven Trek, the list goes on, and undoubtedly all very good frames.
Not mentioned yet - Ridley and Argon 18 - take a look.
Probably a lot more will be said endorsing every frame but I bet you 50p you go for the one you think looks the best!

As for me - Pinarello Paris Illes Balears -
Now that is the dogs dangleys

Good luck, Steve

Alan at last my insurance company has decided to pay up for my stolen bike :) .

They told me I have to go to Geoffrey Butlers and spend £1500 of their money wahooo.

Looks like I'm gonna be on a proper bike soon.

I think I'm gonna go for either a Look, DeRosa or Bianchi only full carbon of course.

I might have to chip in some more cash for an upgrade.

Decesions, decisions, Alan maybe we can get a better deal if we buy in baulk

There will be no stopping you now George! Sounds like you got a good settlement - GB already offer 10% to ACC and I doubt that they will improve on it. I am going to go to dauphin for a chat next see how I feel about their sales pitch.

Good luck

Bianchi seem to give the best deals/ overall value for money for the whole bike package.

The only thing is that lured green colour.

I always thought that Bianchi bikes *HAD* to be celeste. It's sort of a rule like Ferraris and Ducattis have to be either red or yellow.

They certainly don't look *right* to me in any other colour. Sort of like you are a bit ashamed of them.

i was a bit iffy about buying celest green...i was very embarrassed about anyone i new recognising me... i wanted to stand out as little as possible incase i passed anyone i new from school or elsewere. so i bought the dullest coloured bike i could find...just so happened to be a bianchi...but then i fell in love with cycling and with my bike so i didnt't mind if anyone found out about my double life :P ..eventually my mates found out...a couple days of stick but now they are fine with it.. :D

embarassed yes, but never ashamed :P

i would buy one now in celeste green now though :D

cheers

I with Steve. Pinarello is a proper bike. I have to say though that I have a time edge, which is entry level carbon, but is well good. In fact, too good for my legs..

I spent months / years thinking about my next bike, and now I have bought it, I find that there is something missing in my life. So I do look around for something better, and actualy think that I would struggle to get value for money beyond this price.

In the end, I guess that its all about bling. From this point of view, I think that a colnago is every cyclists dream bike. It will probably retain value the most as well. Colnago with Campag Bora wheels.....groovy...
