ARE YOU READY TO RACE? (Novices)

Postby Andrew G » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:53 pm

Like many of the other's who had a go in the Novice ACC race at Eastway I had fun and plan to have a go at a bit of racing next year. I know I'm not alone from the promises others were making at the time, so no backing down now :) .

Anyway I saw this and thought of you, well us. I'm definately going to go on the 19th (also 5th now as Huw has postponed the TOSH to assist us, cheers. :) ) so hope to see some of you there.

Road coaching sessions this Autumn/Winter

Power Pack and Starter Pack sessions - Nov 5th and 19th

Two sessions for starters and novice racers are being organised by the Surrey League at Brockham, near Dorking in Surrey on Sunday 5th and 19th November 2006. These coaching sessions will be lead by John Leitch and aim to give riders the confidence and knowledge to get you to the start line of your first race and see you over the finish line too.

The sessions start at 12.00 and run until 3.00pm and cost £4 per rider.

The sessions are designed for men and women riders but don't be intimidated by that, John will make you at home and have you riding along in a pack in no time at all. Using a smallish circuit means we are never too far from base, and there are stops to regroup, recover and evaluate progress.

The aim of the sessions are:
to ride and talk…..
to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses
to help you spell out your goals
to listen to the goals of others
to plan your training for the coming week
to plan your training for the coming month
to meet others at the same “raw” stage of racing/race-preparation as you
to help you recognise that you are not the only one worrying about the same things
to relax and make friends
to feel part of a like-minded community

John Leitch says
Surrey League thrives on having a steady flow of new riders. We want you all to feel welcome and to have somewhere to turn for answers. There is something of a strange contradiction in cycle racing in that while everyone is trying their level best (during the race itself) to beat the rest, the sport contains many people who are more than happy to share experiences and offer useful advice.

A coach can help at this early stage by listening to/giving a steer on your proposed winter training schedule while (later on) lending an ear to your plans for the next racing season. This is an open house. So feel free to come along. There are no boundary lines, no need to switch clubs. Just a pooling of new riders still slightly nervous…. but also excited at what their body might be capable of when prepared properly and then put under racing stress… and those who want to move up the ranks next summer.

"Remember, most of us race for the joy of competition, for a feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment." ….that's not a quote from me but from a psychologist. However, it's where I'm coming from, so if you buy into that concept too, we should get along fine.

To book a place you need to email John at john.leitch@rbi.co.uk. There is no need to pre-pay for these sessions, you can just turn up on the day and ride.

For all information about the venues and times etc please contact John Leitch on john.leitch@rbi.co.uk

This was from RoadCyclingUK and there is a women specific session on the 11th November for the ACC ladies who don't want to have to put up a testosterone explosion - no Landis jokes :D

Good Man Andrew!. There's a definite tendency for people to go AWOL having said they're gonna give racing a go - so hopefully with a complete novice like your self promising to start others will join. Here's a tip from me to those who are thinking of racing:

Don't just simply say I'm gonna give racing a go, cause its like saying 'I'm gonna go to and see a Play in the West End'. Its got a kind of non-commital-some time-in-the-future-when-I'm-less-busy-if-I-can-still-be bothered-ring-about-it. Of course all plans are subject to "real life" situations being ok - thats a given.

Send off for a license, pick out a month or date when you plan to race start and working towards it. There are usually beginning races starting in late Feb early March run by London Dynamos which are great way to get involved...Don't just let it happen when it happens cause chances are it'll be towards the end of the season sometime...In this club people are falling over themselves backwards to help you so let us know. Cheers :D

Have just seen this - am definitely up for it. See Huw's post above - or is that now below - about putting off the rescheduled ToSH to accommodate this.

Glad to see I'll have some company :) Will do the 5th as well now, cheers Huw.

Licenses: I think they run calendar years so I guess 1st Jan start.
pick out a month or date when you plan to race start and working towards it.

Take your point Toks I'm fantastic at not doing something today if it can be put off 'til tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a bit of help with this at the training.

Emailed John to register for both days and his reply included the details...
Sunday 5 November 2006 12noon
Sunday 19 November 2006 12noon
-Group 1 - beginners to join a Starter Pack of similar riders, all new to the sport of road racing
and
-Group 2 - existing 3rd Cat and 4th Cat riders to join Power Pack, to work on improving their skills

So not just for complete novices. Also said...
The routine:
to gather once every two, three or four weeks – whichever turns out to be the most appropriate.

I'll post any future dates so those who can't make the first two but still fancy a go can attend later sessions.

General plan of attack:
Unload the bike (if coming by car) and sign on the sheet so we are kicking off on the road at 12 noon…for something like 2 hours, perhaps 3 hours in better weather.
Using a smallish circuit means we are never too far from base, and there are stops to regroup, recover and evaluate progress.
