Huw's winter blog 4 - New novel

Postby huw williams » Fri Nov 03, 2006 6:19 pm

I’ve written a short, romantic novel on a cycling theme. It’s called The Break, here it is:

The Break

“Godfrey, I really must insist we have a talk,” insisted Daphne, “all you seem to do these days is play with that dashed bike of yours. I never see you any more and we never speak. Can’t you reassure me? Isn’t there one thing you can say to show me you love me more than that bike?”

“I think I might ride the fixed on the club run tomorrow,” replied Godfrey.

She walked out of his life forever.

The End

What do you think? It’s a bit melodramatic I know, and could possibly use another chapter or two but hey, Dickens had to start somewhere. I’ve sent it to several reviewers for their comments and have included a few below.

“A Brilliant observation of the social chasms that exist in many families where only one of the partners cycles. Domestic harmony slowly crumbles as the tension rises to the inevitable confrontation.” – New York Review of Books

“An unputdownable pot-boiler of a novel.” – The Scotsman

“What the f**k is this? I read it in about 20 seconds and wished I hadn’t! Where’s the rest? Did Moby Dick mean nothing to you?” – TLS

“Liked it mate, but would have been better if Daphne got her kit off.” – The Sun

Maybe in the sequel Godfrey could become a triathlete.

After the inevitable confrontation regarding cycling he could then go running .....and then go swimming. Imagine his surprise as he returns home to find all of his clothes in bin bags in the front garden.

I wonder how many real life Godfrey's end up moving into a one bed flat, setting up the turbo trainer in the lounge and then thinking "This is much better than all that family life nonsense!".

I showed this to Mrs I. She thought it was very funny but has started calling me Godfrey. Should I be concerned?

 excellent Huw!!. I won't dare show it to the Missus - she'd laugh initially of course, then World War 111 would begin :(

An accomplished and promising debut. Mr Williams gently draws the reader into uncomfortable territory from the very first page before delivering a denouement that is as harrowing as it is unexpected. I think we'll be hearing a lot more of this writer.

After spending 9 hours out on the bike yesterday I think that I may be able to help you out with your ending soon.

Cheers

Godfrey should have set Daphne's expectations from the start. i.e. I will only get married if I can still go training every day. If you want to have a baby and give up work then you have to do all the Housework & Cooking while I'll go to work, finance everything and go cycling WHENEVER I want to without any nagging or moaning.
