Well if you include all the stops etc it would work out at about 16.6kmph, which is a tad over 10mph. If you take out the stops then I reckon it was more like 20kmph, still slow.

Cheers

 Oh dear poor guy...Its a little bit mean I know, but isn't there a part of you that would like to see what he could do on Alpe D'huez :)

Stu,
Yes you're right, Tim and I cleared off due to the way the group was riding.

I don't mind riding hard, but that group was all over the place. 3 abreast down the A23 - no thanks.

We did our own tour of the surrey hills and did some quality miles over some decent climbs. Made a nice change to the monotony of the same old route every week. Fits in better to my winter training plans as well.

Marek, next time you are planning 150km let me know- I'll try my best to keep up the 10mph ave!!!

Jim, see my thread re: Ballbuster next weekend. I hope to get in a fair few miles with some hill chucked in.

Cheers

Marek...

p.s. I do hope to go faster that 10mph next week else my misses is going to kill me, I left home at 7am and got back at 4pm, not the best way to keep her happy.

I can NEVER understand why some people do the same route, same group, same old sit in every week, i like to ride different routes all the time other wise you will just get stale- you know all the hills where to have a dig--too predictable  . There are a lot of other places to go.

Ian, I think that there is a method to the madness. Basically to get a club up to the size that ACC has you need to be able to encourage newbies. This is a good thing. The fact that people know which way to go after a few weeks is good as it allows them to try and move up a group, and know that if they get dropped they will get picked up by the next group etc.

I have ridden with other clubs that have club runs with 4 or 5 people on a good week. Reason is that they don't encourage new people. They normally only have club runs in the winter as during the summer everyone is racing.

If you were just getting into cycling and you went with these guys they would drop you on every hill etc and may not be bothered waiting. The good thing about ACC is that for newbies someone is usually there to pick you up etc and you get to train with people in the summer as not everyone is a racing cyclist.

So, although I agree with you there is a reason for it which should not be missed. As people improve and get better then I suppose it is fun to meet up with familiar faces in the cafe etc. But when you get to a certain level etc I think other routes are a must and I think that the people that like to go on other routes do so, so it is not a problem.

Cheers

i find im more comfortable doing a selection of the same old routes, both with the club and on my own...i find i can then just do them as a proper good training ride, not havng to stop every now an then to check the map, good for a solid ride...

but saying that i am getting a bit, not bored but, bla bla about my own training routes so soon i think im going to have to venture out to the other side of gatwick crawley and reigate..''DAN DAN DAAAAAA...ARGHGHGHGHGH!! '' (the horror music thingy).

i have started doing it a bit, but it is a pain because i never feel as though ive trained hard enough because like i say, i have to keep stopping for the map..but then i suppose the more i do it the more i get to know it, the more bored...its a viciose cycle!! (get it )...

but then i suppose the answer is to go with a partner who knows a route that you dont, do that for a couple of weeks then swap and do the one you no for few weeks.

stu.

I say "fair play" and indeed "Chapaux" to the guy for getting out and riding his bike. OK, he may not be fit or fast, but it sounds like he's prepared to try and do something about at least one of those things.

[quote]just before mestham, a couple of people dropped out

I missed the start by about 20 seconds, and seeing the group in the distance put a little effort to catch up. Well it took me almost four miles, just before we ride under the bridge on the dual carriageway, of maximum effort to get back to someone's wheel. Then just two miles later, having barely recovered, on the climb before the service station turn, I dropped my chain and couldn't put it back on whilst riding, so had to stop for ten seconds - and that was it, the group was already miles ahead. As I wasn't feeling great I decided it wasn't worth the effort again, and that I'd soft-pedal waiting for the next group. Kieran and Simon "Hulk" went past, Kieran told me Simon was on a mission to catch up with the front group - good luck to him, I thought, I'm not taking part in this foolishness! Kieran and I rode for a bit until we got caught by the 19s, then we had a nice fast-ish ride all the way to the café.

Only about three of us were up for Box Hill, until one by one we finally decided to go back the short way. By that time the front group with Stu was miles ahead, we didn't regroup until the church stop. When we got back in Croydon I was feeling better than I'd started, so went for an extra tour and ended up doing 128km.

Having not gone on a club run for ages I decided to go this staurday, as usual my well honed preparation included wine and snacks the night before with a late rise resulting in a race to CSS to get there before everyone gone. Got there just in time for Monty to see me and wave me on telling me the training group had just left and Simon was just up the road. Stupidly I did as Monty suggested and off I went racing after Simon, I finally caught up with him but between the race to CSS and the chase I was knackered, so sat on Simon's wheel (sorry Simon) for a while. We caught the 19 group and went past with some following, we slipped past at some lights in Reigate and continued the foolhardy chase of the training group. I was just on the verge of letting Simon go when Sylvian turned up and I dropped back and joined him. We then set a more humane pace and eventually the 19'ers caught up and we stuck with them all the way to the cafe, doing a good through and off, keeping everyone together. HAd a welcome recovery break at the cafe. Rode home the short way as no one really up for box hill (except Paul H and one or two others). Got home about an hour earlier than usual. Later on checked the hrm data. Lots of peaks above 190bpm, very ragged profile unlike in a race. I think I need to train for the training group :!:
