MGM to release the Flying Scotsman in the US. Hopefully with MGM backing it'll get a proper release here. Film about a Scottish Time Trialist gets released in America before England. :?

I wouldn't hold your breath. I read in the BECTU magazine a couple of months back that none of the crew that worked on the film had been paid and were, understandably, none too pleased about it. Don't know if anything's been resolved, but last I heard it had very little chance of being released here. Would love to be proved wrong, of course.

Only Obree's. He built his own out of spare parts and odd bits and pieces. The one in the pic which he first broke the record on famously had bits from a BMX and a washing machine. Others looked odd like Boardman's Lotus bike...
and this Pinerello

UCI in there wisdom changed all the rules, Obree came back and broke the record again with his invention, the superman position...

...so they banned that!
Great book, and the UCI really didn't like him, to the point where they said his saddle/position was illegal on the morning of his record attempt. He replaced it with a saddle off a BMX/kid's bike and broke the record.
He was a real innovator and regularly stuck it to the big manufacturers with his own concepts.
He's back time trialling again now, and turns up as ever on a fixed wheel with a monstrous gear and home made handlebars.

Not a lot of people know this but when mountain bike racing exploded in the early 90s Obree considered crossing over. So I flew to scotland with a photographer to interview him and we hired a car at the airport where Obree met us.

"We'll do it at my house" he suggested "Its about 20 miles, just follow me".

We walked outside expect him to have his car waiting hut he had this shed of a mountain bike with a big old rack on the back, mudguards the lot.

I sh1t you not, he tapped out a relentless 30mph all the way to his house while we followed in a hire car - it was awesome - we were llike "what's this guy gonna do on a proper bike?". The answer of course is history.

Is that where your irrational fear/hatred of mudguards came from, Huw?
Wasn't the mountainbike his regular training bike? I remember something about him hammering around on the mountainbike, so when he got on his "good" bike for a competition it would feel so much easier for him to ride fast.

Yeah that's about the size of it - he had shall we say a very uncoventional approach to everything, nice fella though I thought.

Marco the Norway story and the marmalade sarnies are in the book so true. Don't remember the beer one.
btw - in the book does it mention what happened at le Groupement?
I know he was signed up to ride as a pro team with Robert Millar in France. i also know he lasted about three days before telling them to stick it. Was it because they told him what training he was gonna do or was there something else going on in the team ?

It does cover this. Not read the book for a while but if memory serves me he was signed as a pro following his track performances. He was only in France for 2 - 3 weeks though as at the training camp he was asked (as all riders were) to contribute to the "health fund". He told them where to go and came home straight away.

If you haven't read the book, you have to. I won't put any spoilers down just recommend it. I have a copy that can be borrowed if you are fiscally challenged, but would definately want it back.

Just got a flyer for this from Bromley Video so guess what's on my shopping list.
Battle of the Bikes + On Yer Bike…
Obree and Boardman are in every way at the opposite ends of the spectrum… Obree's eccentric character takes him out of any catergory"
"Obree lives with his instinct, his feeling, which dictates his way of life…"
Disc One: Contains two unique films and an exclusive interview. The first film Battle of the Bikes, compares Graeme Obree, who built his own bike out of washing machine parts and rode it in his own unique crouched position to became the World Hour Record holder, and his great rival from the Wirral, the '92 Olympic Pursuit Champion Chris Boardman, who achieved his first World Hour record six days after Obree. Inspired by cycling journalist Adam Glasser, this film remains to this day, an utterly fascinating record of man and machine competing head to head.
Disc Two: The second disc contains the film On Yer Bike, an intimate portrait of Obree from an amateur cyclist to World Hour Record holder, World Champion and international cycling star. We also have the intriguing story of the banning by the UCI of his unique riding position and his most famous creation, 'Old Faithful'.
Next is an exclusive interview filmed at Herne Hill with former British national coach Doug Dailey, who was trackside at Boardman and Obree's biggest victories. He gives us a unique insight into their individual characters and talks about their special rivalry.
BONUS DISC: Top cycling photographer Phil O'Connor tells us about that famous Hour Record at Hamar. The bonus disc also contains unique archive film footage and interviews, including:
• Phil O'Connor interview
• Graeme Obree's British Hour Record at Herne Hill, May 1993
• Graeme Obree's 50 mile Record, RTTC Championships, June 1993
• Obree vs Collinelli in 4000m Pursuit Final, Manchester 1995
• Graeme Obree talks about the feature film based on his life The Flying Scotsman, 2006.

Sylv - I've got The Escape Artist but you're welcome to borrow The Flying Scotsman. Do you want me to bring it to the dinner?
