Aodan did really well in that race, although he said after he didn't feel particularly fast - must have beaten me by about one minute. I'm sure if you gave him a lightweight cross bike he'd've come in the top 15, in a race that had some top UK riders.

Recently I have been thinking of getting a cross bike, especially around 45 mins through a race when the cross bikes start passing me on the hills, I reckon it cost me at least 3 or 4 places last Sunday. Trouble is I'm torn between :

or this

but either of these would mean putting the"fun" bike on hold.

Things you never thought you'd say..."Uncle John looks rather nice".
Is Focus at Wiggle worth a look as their bikes tend to get good reviews? t'internet though so you can't try before you buy. Also with Uncle John you might be able to build up from bits you already have to cut costs.

It took a few weeks to get together but I did go for the cross bike and although I've only raced it once yet it did seem a lot easier to keep up. Pity about the puncture I got half way through which ruled me out. I guess that's the downside of the narrow tires.

As for the picture, that's just the panic of seeing one of these steep drops for the first time on efffectively a rigid road bike. I'm more used to just dropping in and leaving relying on the MTB suspension to keep the wheels in contact with the ground.
