Hillingdon 30 Dec

Postby Paul H » Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:24 pm

Had another go in the 4ths. My goal was to get enough points for my 3rd Cat Licence (2 Points).

It was a larger field today and I think the organiser said 33 riders. It was also windy with a naster Head wind down the straightish bit at the back of the course. The track was dry and it didnt rain while we were racing.

After about a couple of laps, I attacked and got pulled back. I also joined another couple of early attacks to no avail. At about 15mins gone, I found myself at the front of the bunch in the Head Wind and I decided to go as hard as I could and see what happened. As we went round the last bend before the finish, I had a look and there was 2 people on my wheel and we had a small gap on the bunch. One of the other riders (fit-for) went on the front and we cracked on. I ended up on the front on the headwind straight again and put another big effort in as I new if we could increase the gap here, we could stay away for good. We managed to get some more time on the bunch and the 3 of us started to do through and off and committed ourself to the finish which was still 30 minutes away. Having said that, the work at the front was not shared equally - the guy from fit-for probably did the most followed closely by me and then followed not so closely by the other guy. I was wasnt sure how far the pack were behind but we seemed to be overtaking people that were dropped every lap so they must have been working hard. The bell for the last lap went and I again did a big turn in the headwind which ruined any chance of winning and predictably the other 2 sprinted past me and the guy who did the least work won - that's bike racing I suppose. I was not particularly bothered as 3rd was more than enough points for me to get my 3rd Cat Licence and I just wanted to make sure the pack didnt catch us. I was also chuffed that I created the break as well. In the end, they were 48 seconds behind.

For the training scientists like Toks, my average HR for the last 30 minutes during the break was 185. When I do 30 mins on the Turbo, I can only manage an average of 170 and 312 watts.

Now looking forward to racing 3rd Cat on the road and probably getting a hiding.

Happy New Year

Nice one Paul welcome to the 3rd cats

Good breakaway into a nasty headwind for 30 mins :o

The man in green John said he would give it a go in the 4th cats at Hillingdon.

Looks like were getting a handy crew together :)

IMHO British Cycling should put John straight into the 2nd cats.
I'd hate to think what he'd do to a field of 4th's around Hillingdon.

Well done Paul, congrats on the new cat.

I can't imagine any of you chaps in the training group will be 4th cats for long. I'm sure you're all strong enough to get the points quite quickly (if that's what you want) with a bit of race cunning.

I need to start doing some vo2max intervals starting next week. I hope to get going sometime in March. I won't be doing any of the winter series though. :)

Well done again Paul! That wind must've been nasty.

Hoping to race this Sat. If John's doing the 4th race, think I might get there early just to watch!
