Chain rub on rear stay HELP ME

Postby Marek » Wed Jan 17, 2007 10:01 pm

I have spent half the day trying to get my chain not to rub on the inner part of the rear stay. When I am on the smallest sprocket it rubs and I have tried loads of things to stop it.

I have adjusted the limit screws so that if I tighten a little bit more it will change up a gear. I have checked the cassette, have tried another wheel but still does it. Have even tried three different cassettes but does with all. It looks like a matter of one of two mm out or so.

Has anyone had this before and how do you solve the problem. Is it a frame issue or could I be missing something.

This is on my Pinarello Sestriere with ten speed campag.

Cheers

Does it make any difference whether it's an 11 or a 12? If it's rubbing on the seat stay with a 12, changing to an 11 might just give you a bit of clearance. Otherwise, you could adjust the limit screws so you can't use the smallest sprocket, which I guess isn't ideal. Or, the Sestriere is steel isn't it?, so you could very carefully squeeze the tube to flatten it in where it rubs.

Try a small spacer or washer in the rear axle

Is the chain the corect lenght?

Are you using campag chrous or record as these require a specific bb to get the chain line right. Have a look on the park tools website they might have the answer.

I have a chorus BB and Chainset. Am using with a Veloce rear mech. To me it looks more like the issue is at the back, I don't think a different BB would help as the Chainset is already set very close to the rear stay.

I think I may try the spacer option that Simon suggested.

On the seat stay, so the chain comes over the smallest sprocket and then rubs on the seat stay before then making its way to the Chainset. With me?

It is a Pinarello Sestriere, which is a reasonably old style frame, but not that old. The wheel does sit centrally, I checked that. I have used much older frames with 10 speed and never had a problem, I think I may take it back the shop and ask them what the issue is.

In relation to moving the central position on the wheel, will I need to put in another spacer, won't the rear stay just bolt in the same position and just be stretching a bit more across and therefore would still rub. Not sure I get what you mean.

If it does not take ten speed then I will be really annoyed.

I put a couple of washer onto the axle and this seems to have almost sorted it out. I am not sure how to undo the non drive side of the Campag Eurus so have just put it on next to the frame, do you reckon this will be alright or should I take it to a shop and get them to put them on properly?

Mind you I still intend to try and get an answer from the shop I bought the frame as I don't reckon there is anything wrong with the wheel, use it on other bikes and is fine.

Cheers
