This is a interesting thread.

My feeling is that BB is rubbing its hands together. Everyones a winner a the moment.

1) Increased Ratings
2) Increased Profile for Jade - although perhaps more realistic
3) Increased Profile for Shilpa.

The only things to suffer are;

1) The UK and its image as a Tolerant Society, but thats political clap trap anyway.
2) Me - Cos I'm starting to get interested in BB. I have spent many years ignoring it, and ended up watching a bit...aarhh!!

[quote]Paul H wrote....I only said possibly and not accusing anybody.

I see the situation as 3 unpleasant people being nasty to another person. If somebody see's it as 3 white people against an Indian then they have singled the Indian person out as somebody different and assumed things because of her race (possibly).
Im not sure why everyone is so frightened about labelling someone a racist. By my definition if you make an off the cuff disparaging remark about someone from another race I don't think that makes you a racist.

However if these disparaging remarks are made continually, systematically and are harmful then 'yes' that makes you a racist. But you're still not in the same league as what I'd call a real racist. One who backs these abhorrent view points with actions. For example, refusing to shake someone's hand, not allowing that person to come into their house, refusing to employ them based on colour/ethnicity etc. (all these things have happened to me!)

Jakki, Jade, Joe, Jack and Daniel have all expressed viewpoints that would as a group put them in my definition as being racist. However looking at their comments individually you could possibly argue either way.

Finding a target (Shipa) to rail against is essential in weak insecure groups. In fact abusing their target would be deemed key to strengthing group position. Its amazing what you can achieve once you've got that consensus and its backed by a set of morals outside the norm.

No matter what we think some 20,000+ people believe Shilpa has been subject to racism thats whats important.

Oh finally, don't get caught out by the red herring in this debate. Jade can't be racist because her father is mixed race. What a load of old bollocks. Some of the most racist people actually date, are married to or even have/had a friend or two who are from the race they're actually discriminating against.

I'm of the 'don't watch it' school. If this particular tree falls in the forest and there's no-one around, it doesn't make a sound. Or something :?

I think you need to know why they targeted Shilpa in the first place.

I had the misfutune of working for HSBC bank in the 1980's and at every branch I was at, there was always a "queen bee" her mindless followers and a victim of bullying. Unfortunately large groups of women are like that (feminist comment).

If any of them are racist I suspect it is Daniele.

[quote]Toks, hows life with the new team?
Hey not bad mate. We haven't actually had a proper full team ride yet. Its so much harder to get everyone together in the same place when there's only ten of you. Or maybe its the fact that competitive cyclists are such stubborn creatures of habit and prefer to do their own thing. :?: http://teammosquito.proboards98.com

I think we've got an idea Paul. Shilpa's class, beauty, intellect, confidence, culture probably highlight the Jade-Group's own insecurities. I think you're trying to analyse things too deeply. We give people the label racist based on views or actions they express which appaer prejudicial towards someone of another race. The WHY? doesn't really come in to it.

If I make comment such as women are crap drivers, women should stay at home with kids, women tennis players don't deserve as much as men and women shouldn't be allowed to work these views would quite rightly be judged as sexist. Why I'm saying these things doesn't change things.

As I said before as a group they have been racist towards Shilpa. Its not overt racism admittedly, but its there and in this society at least we call it racism. But individually I agree with you. I don't think they are racist.

I think I just like to be contraversial sometimes and think enough has been said.

I dont know about Women Tennis players getting paid the same. Perhaps we shouldnt go there.

Yeah marek keeps trying. Unfortunately for me on friday's nights I'm either preparing to go up North on saturday morning to see my 'little man' or I'm at my girlfriends which isn't a problem as such, its just the waking up bit... In the spring and summer its easy to wake up at 7am and get ready to come down to CSS. But in the winter its so much easier to get up at 8.30am and head to Richmond Park at 9.30 and be back three hour later.

The first race I hope to have good form in will be The ACC road race on 31st of March so you'll definitley see me in late Feb/march :D

I have read with disgust the behaviour of Teddy Sherigham's bird, Jade, Jade's mum and the one from S Club 7.

I have wondered why BB doesn't kick them out for breaking the rules and just leave us with whoever is left over.

I believe Shilpa is an individual and deserves respect.

I see they are not going to have a live audience for Jade's eviction (if she should be given the boot). Shame, I wanted to see her face when she got booed!

There is a genuine controversy here, but as ever there is a tendency to retreat from uncomfortable thoughts or shut them out. Racism, overt or otherwise cannot be taken lightly because at root it spawns some of the world's greatest injustices.

So, I've started watching since the big scandal and finding it great viewing, and now I see it's ending this weekend, and I'm away from tomorrow!

Ah well rather be outside than watching tv anytime, but hope Shilpa wins - isn't she the coolest classiest girl?

Interesting how she was mimicking a clicheed Indian gran the other day, what with all the scandal!
