LONDON (Reuters) - Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has tested positive for the male sex hormone testosterone, the U.S. rider's Phonak team said on Thursday.

I'll stick this in again to show that not all sports are treated the same.....

Chelsea can spin blood to their heart's content

Duncan Mackay

The Guardian

Blood spinning, the controversial technique used by Chelsea last season, has been officially endorsed by UK Sport.
The government-funded agency, who administer drug testing on behalf of the Football Association, had advised players not to undergo the treatment amid fears it may breach anti-doping rules.
Among the Chelsea players to have received the treatment were the Dutch winger Arjen Robben and German centre-back Robert Huth.
But a meeting last week with Chelsea's club doctor Bryan English has allayed UK Sport's fears and an official statement is due to be released next week confirming the technique is not illegal.
The process involves taking a sample of the player's blood, removing the platelets cells that assist the healing process and then injecting them back into the injured area. It is claimed to speed up recovery.
It was originally developed for use in major trauma injuries, such as in car accidents, but is increasingly being applied to sport.
English joined Chelsea from UK Athletics, where he had been credited with helping Kelly Holmes overcome injury to win the 800 and 1500 metres gold medals at the Olympics last year.
It was while working for UK Athletics that he first came across blood spinning when he learnt about it during a conference organised by the American College of Sports Medicine.

But surely the target is the same, to get the body to recover faster than is 'natural', whether it be from an injury or just muscle over-excertion through heavy training/racing?

[quote]Funny how this story was not so well publicised? Mind you he was hardly enhancig his on field performance, was he?

Too true Sean. Not only do other sports not look very hard for cheats, when they do find them they clamp down oh so hard. 9 month ban and the club support him during this troublesome time for him and his family. Laughable. As a West Ham fan (stop laughing it could be worse) I can confirm he will not be missed during his ban. He never got a game anyway!

Re David's Chelsea story - Surely picking the difference between blood spinning and doping is a cop out. It's still hardly overly legit.

It seems buying refs is okay as well. Get caught, get a weak penalty, buy the appeal panel, get an even weaker slap on the wrist.

[quote]Others have looked at explanations such as the beer Landis had the night before his stage 17 exploit

So, a positive test might be the result of drinking six pints of Young's ordinary. Can we add this to 'missing twin' list of excuses?

He can't!

[quote]In it, they investigated the effects of the ingestion of between 110-160 g of ethanol (2 g/kg bodyweight).

(...)

As a caveat, Landis was quoted at the time as saying that he'd only had one beer. A pint of normal strength beer generally doesn't contain more than 20 g of alcohol - a much lower level than was studied by the Swedish researchers.

I think the level for failing a test is much higher than the '6-beer increase' hence the suggestion that it could 'contribute' to a failed test rather than cause it.

The excuse will have to be a bit more imaginative then that. One of the sprinters suggested that his failed test was caused by 6 beers and having sex 4 times the previous night :D

Where was Mrs Landis :?: And we still haven't found out what role Floyd's dog had in all this

So it seems that the testosterone originates from outside his body if this is to be beleived:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id= ... /jul31news

If found true I can't wait for the laughable 'Hamilton-type' response, "It wasn't me guv, I was not nowhere near when it 'appened".

"12 steps" is all I can say.

If you're a cheat and you get away with it I can kind of understand not saying anything, but if you're caught, admit it and let the rest of the world get on with decideing who REALLY deserved the win.

Bang on Marco, assuming Oscar is aof the religous persuasion, I bet he's thinkinh 'but for the grace of God...................'

I think testing Landis after that 'epic' ride was as likely as Maradonna being tested immediately after he roared and snarled at the TV camera after scoring.

I was immediately suspicious. The day before Landis had a bad day. The next day he storms off and you have to accept that he had a blistering day, whereas the rest had a bad day, all of them at once. I know there are stories of the bunch not waking up and being abnle to catch him, T-Mobile not reacting etc, but Landis was indeed on another planet, much as Diego was.

As for Oscar's statement about him 'feeling for the guy', I go bak to 99 when an increasingly irate Ja Ja responded to journalists asking 'is doping prevailent in the peleton.? Ja Ja said' do you thing we climb 5 mountains for 7 hours on bread and museli'?

Mr. Pererio's reaction to all of this disturbs me. It's not exactly the response of someone who feels cheated out of the biggest win of his life. So how far down the results list do we go before we can find someone we believe in.

1 Floyd Landis (USA) Phonak 89.39.30 (40.784 km/h)
2 Oscar Pereiro (Spa) Caisse d'Epargne-Illes Balears 0.57

You're right Sean, the loophole needs closing.
How can that many riders get over all those mountains if they all have such breathing difficulties.
