Andy,
The next 2 local ones are:
[quote]February 11 2007
Old Portlians C.C.
Halstead Village Hall, Halstead, Kent
100k starting from 09.00hrs and 68k starting from 09.30hrs

[quote]February 18 2007
Sydenham Wheelers. Knockholt Village Hall, Knockholt, Kent
110k and 70k starting from 09.00hrs

I'll be doing the 100k Old Ports, although I won't do the one on the 18th as the CTC hilly (and it is all hills!) 50k is on Saturday 17th. That starts from Ryka's Cafe at the bottom of Box Hill at 10. Last year had an excellent ACC turnout and there'll probably be a meet and ride over from CSS.
See you on a hill soon. :D

PS. I notice others have put their times up so...mine was 4 hours dead, so I wasn't going that slowly.
I think the tortoise and hare approach has something going for it if you're not training for the racing season. A steadier start (although not as slow as I went) and staying at a consistent pace right to the end. I (and Jonathan who I was with) passed quite a few in the last 15 miles who'd obviously gone out too hard and died.

I can't make Old Ports but have a total freedom pass for the following weekend, so will try to do both the CTC and Sydenham Wheelers rides.

The resultant pain in my legs might take my mind off the pain of my wife being away

A great ride. Up at six and on the road by seven riding thruogh derserted streets. I was the forst rider at the village hall so had a nine oclock start with Huw and about 15 others. A decent pace out to Turners, most of the group lurking around at the back not wanting to do any work , but luckily we were being dragged along by a couple of strong riders who seemed happy enough to sit on the front. Never having done the ride before and not knowing the route or how sadistic the organisers were I knew I'd probably set off a bit on the fast side and not sure if I would have much in reserve, but in for a penny , or in this case a fiver, I thought sod it. Huw, I'm glad I wasn't the only one dropped on Turners, was almost getting back on on the decents but gave up. A few fast groups flew past and I didnt even try to catch a wheel. Met up with Apples and then another ACCer, sorry forgot your name ,on the red Trek, but by this stage in the precedings I was starting to suffer.
Scoffed a few choccy bars at the last feed stop and started to get a bit of feeling back into my legs. Guy from Pearsons pulled in and we set off,but were soon joined by Marek, Tim and George so the pace shot up and I was off the back, again. Luckily the choccy bars kicked in and I managed to pass a few suffering riders on the last two climbs.
I didn't bother to check my exact time, but it was well within 4 hours so was pleased with that.
A great ride, well organised with good signage and good weather.

Thanks for the details on the next two rides - any one done the Halstead ride before, what is the route like?
Quite fancy doing the 100k - how many do they normally get there and is it turn up and enter on the day?

Any info would be good, also any other agreeables doing this one.

The Halstead one is the best of the lot cos its very scenic - going right up to the top of Ashdown - it's also the hardest with Fordcombe, Toys and Star hills included in the route - expect the same number of riders as last weekend or even more if the weather is as good.

Same team is doing the signage so it'll be clearly marked

Agreeables looking to do sportives this year would do well to give it a shot so fingers crossed for a big turnout

I have tried to find some photos on the net from this but cannot find any. I saw loads of people taking photos on the ride, has anyone seen anything?

Cheers

Marek....
