Who has the lightest bike?

So when I was building up Sylvain's old Merlin with the parts from my Cannondale I realised I was sad enough to weigh it.

Ok I admit it, I weighed all the parts. Frame seems to be dead on 1kg.

Now until I replace some of the old parts with new kit this bike isn't going to win any prizes (I think Sylv had it at 7.5kg with loads of carbon stuff, and now it's around 8.5kg with a triple and fairly heavy Campag Scirocco wheels). At some point I'll get a compact chainset and a new set of wheels.

But it started me wondering which Agreeable holds the record for lightest road bike? The UCI legal minimum is 6.8kg which is pretty achievable with off the shelf parts these days.

PS I have to find something to do when I seem to have had a cold EVERY WEEKEND since Xmas. When I haven't I've been away, which is why I haven't been out for a while...

I went to the TCR show at sandown on saturday, and Poshbikes had a Storck Fascenario built up at 4kg!!!

I picked it up and i couldnt believe it!

But the price...

£12,000, ouch

It had some seriously bespoke kit on it though, rims developed in conjunction with lockheed martin, ax lightness brakes and saddle, crazy s***. Oh and carbon chainrings, i didnt even know you could make them out of carbon!

i wouldn't ride that bike. i think the chainrings fall apart if you do anything extreme like change gear.

Carbon chainrings are best suited for use on a single ring set-up like some people use for their time trial bikes, otherwise they can be a bit prone to snapping teeth off. I think the rings on the poshbike Storck might have been ultralightweight jobbies just for show.

I was looking at the Scott bikes at TCR. I was very tempted by the CR1 (880g frame) or Addict (790g frame), but managed to keep the credit card in my wallet. You build either of those into a UCI illegal bike with off the shelf parts.

Well i said to the guy dont they wear out...

and he just laughed, and said 'what makes you say that?'

apparently due to the nature of carbon being self lubricating, the take years to wear out, they had a set up with 5year old carbon rings on, and theyre as good as new. he said that he only knows one occasion of a tooth being broken, and that was using a downtube shifter, and the rider 'cocked' it up so the story went. so i asked why not make cassettes from carbon, and the reason not to is beacuse they are subject to more extreme lateral forces i.e changing gear, and due to the reduced diameter the same stiffness cannot be achieved. also chainrings are thicker than sprockets.

well its all academic anyway, its not like most of us will ever be able to afford them anyways!

well mine is about 8kg's i think, but im not exactly sure. Cant say ive ever measured it myself!

Mine is 7.2kg weighed on a set of fishing scales. The spec is :-

52cm 2001 Trek OCLV 120 frame (1200g) + original icon fork (500g).
Dura Ace 10 groupset.
Alex 3.1 rim 24 hole front clincher rim, mig 70 hub, Sapim CX-Ray Spokes. (600g)
Alex R400 28 hole rear clinher rim, Powertap SL hub, Sapim CX-Ray Spokes. (1000g)

Syntace F99 stem (100g).
Speedplay titanium pedals (164g).
Schmolke carbon SL carbon bars (166g).

Michelin latex tubes (70g ea) .
Tune titanium skewers (52g).

OK fellow geeks unite!

Mine should be about the same, 7.1-7.2 (haven't weighted the whole thing together) - frame/forks much lighter than Robh's, but some bits much heavier. The bars in particular are pig-heavy but I've got used to the flat top and shaped contours.

you're pushing UCI disqualification! wouldn't replacing the forks be the most economical way to save a chunk of weight?

Not mine that's for sure!!!

Ribble winter bike that on test with 105 is 21lbs. Mine has Mirage with a triple, Brooks saddle and with my SQR bag attached probably about 26lbs
