Yes it is tomorrow. What time is the 'off' from CSS?

Also what is the route out to Rykers?

You don't need to be a CTC member Ian, just bring £3 for your entry.

Does anyone fancy meeting at CSS and riding over together?

8:30 leave CSS?

Andrew posted this earlier this week, spoke to him on Wednesday evening he said he is going as long as the forcast was ok.

10.30 Start at Rykas

Forecast is good - dry and light winds.

Good tyres needed though - some real tight lanes which will be a mess after the rain this week.

I thought it was 10 at Ryka's Huw?

If it's 10:30 then 9 at CSS would probably be better.

Was planning to do this and the RR on Sunday, but have been laid low by a stomach bug all week - probably brought on by the parking ticket I picked up outside the Beer Circus on Tuesday :x

Have also got to bone up for an importantísma job interview next Tuesday.

All of which means my bike's unlikely to get an outing this weekend. :(

Spaces outside the circus are highly prized and defended with some vigour by the street wardens.

Anybody going out on a limb and predicting a time for the Hilly 50?

Way harsh, I thought. 9.34pm, apparently. I didn't notice the ticket until the following day.

And there was me thinking I'd had a cheap night!

Well, I wa hoping to do this but two things have conspired to stop me:

1 - I have been nursing a cold/chest infection for nearly 2 weeks. I'm now feeling quite a bit better, but still not right, and don't really want to risk anything bigger than a standard club run where I know I can pace myself round quite well.

2 - I have to be back in Bromley fairly early in order to go and see an old car I'm interested in in the afternoon

Got up nice and early this morning in preparation for todays ride. Then cycled over to Merstham to meet up with George, Paul H, Graham and Simon H.

We headed over to Box Hill taking the long hill up from Merstham to the top of the hill close to the motorway junction which then leads you down into Reigate with a great fast descent. Tried to set off the speed camera but don't think I managed it.

A brisk pace over to Rykas for a nice cuppa coffee with the boys before we set off with the 10.30am group. As we approached the first climb I spotted Gary Dodd, knowing that if it was going to get a bit tasty today that he would be the one winding it up I jumped onto his wheel. Then within about a minute I was surrounded by the creme de la creme of south east road racing, namely the Paragon Posse.

As I had done no training all week I was starting to get a bit worried, and rightly so as when we hit the climb I just could not keep up. Paul and George looked to keep pace but I did not have it in me today.

Over the top and onto the descent, now I think I descend reasonably quickly and was gradually picking riders off, when all of a sudden out of nowhere a Norwood Paragon rider went past me like I was standing still. I have no idea who it was but he looked intent on catching up with the group ahead and the speed he was going I am sure he caught them. Very impressive.

I was now destined for a ride with riders who were also not able to keep pace, Simon H and Kevin from Paragon along with Graham and we had a good ride until about 2 - 3 miles before Whitedown when I just blew up, so did Simon so we just took it very easy. In fact we took it as easy as we possibly could as we were both suffering like dogs. Simon H got off on Whitedown, I have no idea whether he walked up or got back on, but he looked a sorry site but I was head down and trying to concentrate on keeping the legs going.

I waited for Simon over the top and scoffed a breakfast bar, I offered some to Simon, he said he wanted some and I decided that I could not give it to him so he didn't get any. Sorry Simon I was in dire need, although you looked as though you needed it as well.

After Whitedown we dawdled with some old geezer until we got to Rykas cafe again, this is where we found that the ride finished at the top of Box Hill. Simon and I decided that we would have to work up to Box Hill so went back into Rykas for more coffee and a cake. This gave us time to ponder on how long it would take us to get up Box Hill. It took an age.

When we got to the top Addiscombe Massif was there so we joined a few others and headed off. Ian Munnery and myself turned off and cycled down to Reigate and then into Merstham which then left me with a lonesome slog back to EG. All in all a good day out, lots about 135km on the clock, only problem being that I need to get some speed in my legs as the first race is in about three weeks. Hmm, turbo trainer beckons this week.

Cheers

Marek.....

Very hard ride today. About 6 of us rode over from CSS to Ryka's to sign on and await the off.

As expected a hot pace from the start. Tried to keep up with Graham and some others but Ranmore is a nasty hill and I can't ride up it at that pace, certainly not straight off the bat without getting the legs spinning first. Continued to just ride steady to the top and waited for Mark, Ian and the others. Mark and I started to pull away from the others and set off for a slightly quicker ride. We continued at a reasonable pace which would have made for a very pleasant ride, however about half way round we saw a group with Marek, Graham, and a couple of Paragon riders pinging along. Seeing the opportunity I jumped in with this group.

I just sat in at first getting used to the pace, Mark seemed to have disappeared and said later he'd got a puncture. Hit the next hill and got a bit dropped (as expected) but stayed close enough to catch back up with Marek thanks to a bit of fast descending. Caught up with Graham and now only one Paragonian after a little charge, don't think Marek (6ft5) got much help from draughting when I (5ft6) did a turn on the front though. :D

Marek seemed to drop back on the next section, suffering with a bad cold, but I managed to stay with the other two. We all did some work but Graham easily did more than enyone else.

Whitedown - dropped again, another fast descent and I managed to catch up just after the turn on to Ranmore Common. Some bit n' bit along here before going down Ranmore and back to Box Hill. I did a long fast pull between Ranmore and Box as I could feel I was starting to die so thought I'd give one last dig to try and slow the others to my pace up Box. Didn't work, at the bottom my legs fell off and they disappeared in to the distance  .

Coffee and an enormous brick of flapjack before the trip back. Fairly quick pace with my legs screaming, but Graham was flying today and didn't seem to be feeling the pain.

Bloody hard ride today so I'm off for a few pints of "recovery drink".

I seem to have done a lot of hilly rides lately and I'm getting a bit pissed off with cycling up all the time. Roll on Brighton next week and a good flatter ride (apart from the Beacon). Just what do people have against cycling on flat roads? :?
