I seriously would not... honest even a bike bling lover like me would think twice, a good set of race wheels at my level are probably availiable for about £60!
I would guess that Marco was pretty honest in his assessment, a super set of wheels are not going to get anyone up the 'cats' faster- more work and structured training will get you better results.
Whilst on the topic tho i would like some opinions on a nice set of wheels meself  ... a few caveats... no red on them anywhere... no carbon rims...blue bits are ok tho.
Price? Well..... its for my de rosa.

[quote]why!?

I liked the Hed wheels, they had blue on.
Seriously tho - in my many visits to bike shops and asking for various bits,
i have lost count of the shop assts who say "well we dont stock/do those bits"- but we do these (inevitably more pricier) and have found these to be better. Hence 'sigma et all' will not reccomend a product they dont stock- also a scare story will arise about said product.

I think i know what i mean.

Ian,

Have a look at GBs/Bike Plus. They were doing Reynolds Alta Comp, (I think). Reduced from just under £300 to just under £200. They may even have blue in them or are they a bit cheap for the De Rosa

You could of course always spend the money on a set of mighty fine handbuilt wheels for about £300 and get blue hubs or something or is that too old fashioned.

adam,
im going to say yes... if i had that much cash floating around i have to say i would buy a pair of £999.99 wheels. youve got a long time to pay it back, and lets face it theres not much you could spend that money on that you actually need....

its better than spending your student loan on beer.

also combine it with all that training and it can't do any harm...and who knows it could be that extra fraction bit of speed in a race that could help you pinch first in a race..you never know...

My race level justifies (sp) £60 on a wheel set, however my budget is a tad more bling 8) .
A light bike is not what i am about, its about understated cool urban chic!
shurley shome mishtake.
I wanted something a little different from the crowd- not that there's anything wrong with conforming etc.
Realistically it is far better for me to lose a few kilos(alright a lot of 'em  ) than buy lightweight componentry.

I voted no. My best race wheels are a Corima disk (£500) and a Planet-X 82 (£250), which gives enough change from a grand for a pretty decent set of training wheels too.

However, if the question had been phrased "Would you spend £999 on a set of wheels if you had it to chuck around with wild abandon and were building up a bling bike for the sake of it?" then I would have voted yes. Then again, £999 wouldn't be near enough for a set of Lightweights.

I voted no simply because of where we live. If I had the spare cash (if only) and lived on the continent with nice smooth roads then yes.

If you are going to race crits I don't think you'd get enough benefit from the aero effect with the tight courses, and on the Surrey League courses there are just too many rough surfaces and potholes (just ask Marek how many rims/wheels he's got through). The SL argument would apply to using them for training as well.

I think a very good set of lightweight racing wheels, like a Ksyrium SL or ES, and a good set of training wheels would give you more benefit for your money, and maybe leave some spare. (Don't know the cost but what about Ksyrium SL with a powertap?)

Sorry to put a downer on it as a bling carbon rim looks, and sounds, fantastic, but I'd be too concerned that having spent all my money I couldn't afford the repair bills from Surrey road abuse.

Good for TTs as you can see what's ahead of you and often on smoother fast roads.
